Most would agree that sovereignty capabilities, like defending local interests in the Artic, need to be home-grown. It is hard to see how procuring military equipment and supplies from the US advances that goal.

I am tired of seeing defense spending get a pass because of IR Theory.
No, it isn’t.
The MND announced an „immediate 20% pay increase“ on two separate interviews when all these announcements came out and that is actually going to be far less and not happening until the winter at the earliest even though both bills are approved and the funding was allocated.
Can’t even get the troops a raise, how are they going to go out and buy that much equipment from industry and get it into the hands of the people they can’t even get a pay increase to (let alone train them to use it)? The answer is they won’t, because they can’t.
I would love to see the government start producing something valuable, en mass, like ammunition (more than we do now) and drones.
We could create more jobs, such as factory / manufacturing positions as well as more tech / development research positions. We could supply ourselves and sell to our allies, using any profits to offset the funding costs our military.
It Will be a challenge for sure but the definition of defence spending is now very broad that it May not be impossible.
I am curious about which countries they want to buy weapons from? Do they only buy weapons from European countries or still buy a lot from American contractors?
Imo he should make a Climate Corps which is mandatory military service after highschool that is deployed, organized and supported by CAF. Solves a number of issues we are facing with CAF recruitment, funding (hitting NATO targets) and having resources to deal with ever increasing incidents of forest fires, floods ect.
