Unless they can specify threats they’ve received, this feels more like Anand avoiding accountability than anything else.

Years and years ago, I worked in my MP’s local office. Part of the job was non-partisan, which was helping people access government services. I remember a big issue for the riding was helping people sort out either their own immigration status or that of their family. We didn’t ask political affiliation, we helped everyone because it was the job. We had contacts in the relevant departments we could call on.

There was a partisan side to it, which I think is at play here. People would come to the office (in person, or they’d call/email/write a letter) and say they strongly supported X issue and want the MP to advocate for it. Sometimes we supported their position but sometimes we did not. That was when it became a problem. It was always tough to say „I understand your position but it is not one the MP supports or will advocate for“ because some people couldn’t take no for an answer. We got our share of harassing phone calls and threats. Police were called on occasion.

I always have a lot of respect for the people who work the local offices. It can be a thankless job at times but it is important because it’s the workers in the local office who connect residents with government services, more so than the MPs themselves. It’s unfortunate that nothing has changed in the years since I was involved, that the workers are still targeted.
