*For its part, AZERTAC is authorized to state that the agency is committed to maintaining good relations with TASS (Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union, now the Russian state news agency), while expecting Russian colleagues to correct the mistake made. If the Azerbaijani side does not see reciprocity and understanding, then with great regret we will be forced to recall and start using the historical names of the cities of Kaliningrad (Königsberg), Orenburg (Orynbor), Volgograd (Sarysu), Grozny (Solzha-Gala), Novorossiysk (Sudzhuk-Kale), Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Toyohara), Yuzhno-Kurilsk (Furukamappu), Petrozavodsk (Petrskoi), Izhevsk (Izhkar), the Volga River (Itil) and a number of other names.*

Earlier, TASS distorted the name of the city of Khankendi and called it Stepanokert. Since 2023, Khankendi, like the whole of Karabakh, has been returned to Azerbaijan.

China has already started this. 海參崴 (Hǎishēnwǎi) = vladivostok

it should be noted that this was in response to Russia using Stepanakert (the name Armenians use) for the Armenian city Azerbaijan is currently occupying.

so, regardless of what you make of it, it’s just yet another example of anti-Armenian bigotry from Azerbaijan.

Seems like another spit in the face towards Putin, I like it! Keep it coming Azerbaijan.

…and says all that in Russian instead of Azerbaijani? How does noone see the immediate flop of this idea.

    7. Since at least some of those names aren’t historic – they are current, just not Russian, this sounds unbelievably stupid. As it’s a Russian-language media, aimed at speakers of Russian, this will only confuse readers and drive their click rate down. It’s like if idk, Al-Jazeera started calling the English channel Mor Brettanek or La Manche. They can do whatever they want though, obviously.

Let’s congratulate Russia on achieving the rare feat of simultaneously pissing off both the liberal democracies of the world and the crazy dictatorships. A truly great achievement.
