Key points:
* 69% of Canadians support a „hard approach – refusing difficult concessions even if it means a worsening of trade relations with the U.S“ (up 6% since July 13) compared to 31% who support a „soft approach“ with concessions
* 63% of Canadians say Canada should recognize Palestine even if Trump objects, compared to 20% who say we shouldn’t if he does and 17% who are not sure
* Strong support for counter tariffs
* 57% approval rating for PM Carney
One other finding : 68% say Canada should „focus on the best trade deal available, regardless of whether there are tariffs or not“ compared to 20% who say we should only accept an agreement with tariffs.
This is interesting, given that Poilievre called for a no tariff agreement earlier this week – seeming to set himself up to be unhappy with whatever deal is reached.
I doubt this widely understood, but Canada still has one of the lowest average tariffs due to CUSMA.
As I’ve been educated on, Trump ignored the US Korea FTA and just slapped across the board tariffs. I’m guessing he’s not yet prepared to escalate the situation in CUSMA yet because all his aluminum, steel, copper tariffs probably hits some visible industries like the auto sector.
