It’s not like Canada can trust trump to abide by any trade deal he signs. He’s completely untrustworthy. Best to just forget about the US. They’re a lost cause.
To be clear, Canada has TRQs that specify that, above certain limits…
* Butter would be taxed 298.5%
* Cheese from 245% to 315%
* Dairy in general similar ranges.
The Canadian response is typically, *well, those are only theoretical since they never get hit*, but that ignores that they don’t get hit because they’re so punitive that nobody risks it.
And the DST that got canceled was lopsided and probably illegal also.
And don’t forget, for much of his second term, Canada *couldn’t do anything* due to Trudeau, in a self-serving attempt to protect himself, abrogated Parliament, meaning no negotations or deals could be cut for several months.
The problem with Trump isn’t that he’s wrong, just that he’s so inconsistent you can’t deal with him.
At some point Canada needs to realize that a deal with this guy will happen when he wants to, not when we play nice. This is literally a textbook case of him just taking one step back, and then we take a step forward, he says some crazy shit and then goes “no no no, just meet me *here*” before taking another step back, luring us another step forward.
The fact is Trump is just going to keep taking steps back in order to squeeze as much bang for his buck as he can out of us. In such a scenario, the idea of working through diplomacy to find a deal is worthless.
For any deal, both parties need to respect each other, believe in a win-win situation, be genuine in their efforts and have some wiggle room. Trump has not demonstrated he satisfies any of the criteria for us to be rushing for a deal, so we should disengage.
The response is always “oh, but you don’t know how terrible it will for us if we don’t get a deal!”, and the response is always the same, mainly that you both can’t confirm a deal would hold a week with this guy, and also it doesn’t matter if there’s no deal to be had
You can’t pray a deal into existence. Wake up and smell the coffee, our efforts would be better spent mitigating and moving forward and waiting for him. When he wants a deal, we should be ready.
Honestly I’d consider putting the DST back on track, cancelling that plane deal and just making a statement of “we’re ready for a deal, when he feels like it he is more then welcome to come to Ottawa, we’d love to have him”
That’s not me asking for some unrealistic Carney smack down on Trump for some elbows up fetish, that’s me just being realistic in that there’s literally nothing else you can do, so just accept that and move on
