For accessing any content which may or may not be suitable for small children, there’s no way to know where the cut off point lies as the regulations are meaninglessly vague.

People are upset about this, but broadly it is just happening and most people are complying. It’ll be the thin end (or not so thin) of the wedge and a decline into authoritarianism.
This forced data harvest to third party companies reeks of corruption, as somebody is benefitting massively financially from this. But also, the eradication of online anonymity feels like a precursor to something. Is it part of a general preparation for wartime? Easier to control the population when nobody feels like they can express themselves freely online.

I wonder what they’re on now, they were practically boasting about having looked at 6k sites a couple of days ago.
There’s in excess of 1 billion websites.
So as long as no one makes a new website, they’ll have looked at all of them in about 2.7 million years.
Can’t wait to see what my neighbour’s poison of choice is once the DB holding all this data inevitably leaks. My bets are on fisting.

they promote it as a bill that will only protect kids from porn, who would be against that? nobody, obviously.
on day one of the bill coming into law, it started to censor speech on immigration, it even censored a speech a MP made in the HoC.
The only party that said they would repeal this bill is the party that gets called authoritarian fascists by labour MPs.. oh the irony.

This is the soft launch. We won’t be able to see or learn anything about illegal immigration or boat landings soon. Any risk of disorder and things will be shut down for being too inflammatory.

they got pin numbers for TV, why not register with fake details just to get the pin number so when you load up the site it forces you for a pin number, teenagers will know how to do it.
This is a complete mess. It’s like the wild west and no one knows how to control and if they do they’ll abuse it
What’s most sinister of all is the fact that these sites are being pushed to use third party services.
If the government actually cared about doing age verification properly they could have easily set up a service themselves since the government already knows how old we all are, all they need is an API to confirm a user (without the user having to pass any extra details), to notify them when verification occurs so you can respond to fraudulent requests (e.g- kids using parents‘ details) and to revoke verification if you didn’t request it.
It’s the push to third parties that worries me most because it’s pouring personally identifying details into companies that do not already require it, and are almost certainly going to be hacked (not that the government is immune, but it’s already a target since it already has that data).
I’m all for ages restrictions and having to prove this appropriately.
The problem is it’s not a unified approach or solution.
The route of the problem is the access point(s)
Age restrictions should be set at an access level (phone, tablet etc). This would allow blanket level security that is controlled by parents. I do believe parents on a whole should be made accountable for this, however I also feel that a lot of parents are incapable of doing this appropriately. So what do we do then?
Devices should be hugely locked down until a child is over 16
Do those checks mean face scanning as a part of I.D?

I can only find the Commons vote from February 2025. Does anyone have a link to earlier votes for this bill, or is the Feb 2025 the only time it was voted on in the HoC? Also very amusing how it was introduced in by a conservative MP and a Tory co-spinsor yet all Conservatives voted against it.
I’ve never used a VPN in my life, until this change came into effect. Not being able to comment on the most trivial things because of age verification. To me, this isn’t even about porn (although I do occasionally view it) I’m now signed up to a VPN service which I think is now worth WAY more to me than the paltry £120.00 a year it’s going to cost me.
And every single one a potential data leak and fraud waiting to happen.
Genuine question – why isn’t this just done on an ISP level?
