      >The prime minister said the conditions the Palestinian Authority must meet include holding an election and other democratic reforms.

      lol

He knows that won’t happen…Fatah won’t agree to elections just to get recognition from Canada, it would be a death sentence for them.

This isn’t in the article, but I heard one condition, for the UK to recognize Palestine, is that they clearly state where their borders are. That seems ironic, since the borders of the state of Israel seem to have been in flux for decades.

Interesting how wars have unintended consequences. Putin invades Ukraine and that pushes Finland and Sweden into joining NATO. Hamas attacks Israel and as a consequence of the Israel response some western nations are flirting with recognizing Palestinian statehood.

Not only are wars immensely costly in terms of lives and treasure but they are dangerously unpredictable. A pity leaders often fail to appreciate this.

    4. Why the fuck can Isreal meet conditions to then not recognize statehood? If you think a people deserve to be recognized, recognize them!

    5. If Palestine gained statehood they would become another Islamic dictatorship just like their sponsors Iran. There is nothing remotely democratic about who controls the power among the Palestinian people, which is unfortunate because I think the people themselves are held hostage by this faction.

So the reward for massacring 1200 people and kidnapping 250 (55 still in captivity), paying the families of people who murder Israelis (primarily Jews) a pension, and causing a war that has led to destruction, displacement, and death of thousands is recognition and legitimation of terrorism, hate, and invasion.

How can this possibly pass in government? Where are the sane MPs?

    7. Will Hamas allow Palestine to hold fair elections? Let’s find out in the next episode!

    8. What a complete and utter disaster this has turned into. All because Netanyahu wanted to avoid prison and public disgrace. Gaza is destroyed, Israel’s international reputation is in the mud and the entire world is going to recognise a Palestinian state. On top of that, America has proved itself both unwilling and unable to reign in Israel’s violence, and has lost face in front of the entire world. A damn shame.

    9. immaculate political theatre.

he knows the stipulations won’t be met, this is nothing burger that’s meant to boost his approval rating.

I could be wrong, but I doubt that Hamas gives a shit what the West or Europe offers/says. I’m not even sure if they’d listen to any Arab countries. I don’t know who can get through to them, tbh.

wait. Does that mean that Palestine a sovereign entity and that Israel no longer responsible for providing aid.

Cant wait to see Netanyahu and the other right wing make that argument and more people suffer.

Stupid useless performative measure that are NOT helpful at the time.

    12. „canada will recognize palestinian state in **september** if palestinian authority will have elections in **2026**“

I am pretty sure that one of options is correct:

      * time doesn’t work like this
      * canada has time machine, so it can travel from 2026 back to september 2025 and to say if elections were held

      >The prime minister said the Palestinian Authority must hold an election in 2026 and commit to other democratic reforms…

      >Carney said Hamas can have no role in the election he is proposing. He also reiterated that Hamas needs to release the remaining Israeli hostages and said a Palestinian state must be demilitarized.

      Good luck with that.

Hamas will claim they achieved Palestinian statehood through October 7th.

      Why wouldn’t they?

      * 43% of likely Palestinian voters would vote for Hamas, making it the most popular party^1
      * 77% of Palestinians don’t support disarming Hamas even if it would end the war
      * 50% of Palestinians think October 7th was the correct decision. That’s the lowest it’s been but what will it be if statehood is achieved?
      * 87% of Palestinians deny that Hamas committed atrocities on October 7th

[Source: Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research’s poll dated May 6, 2025](https://pcpsr.org/en/node/997)

^1 [In the 2006 Palestinian Legislative Election, Hamas won a majority of the seats with 44.45% of the vote](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Palestinian_legislative_election)

I certainly don’t see anyone giving the Palestinian Authority much credit for statehood.

    14. A two state solution is the only solution.  That said, Canada and Britain will both decide in September NOT to move ahead with recognition of Palestine due to them not satisfying conditions but will reiterate that they are committed to a two state solution in the long term.

    15. Sooo… how is the PA gonna release the hostages? They have no hold on Hamas. They arent in Gaza. They cannot demilitarize Hamas and Gaza. The PA can promise to release the hostages till theyre blue in the face, they have less influence and control over that than Canada itself does.

Demilitarize the West Bank? Ummm ok, I guess…

And what happens if they dont do all this? Does the recognition get revoked? What borders can they claim? Is this a „choose your own borders“ kind of deal where they just say what they want? Can they claim Tel Aviv?

Also – forcing a democracy and internal operations is just wrong. You cant force a democracy on them. It has to come from them. Last time outside forces tried to do this, Gaza elected Hamas. This is just idiotic.

    16. I’m stupid…what would recognition do for the Israel-Palestinian conflict?

    17. case-o-nuts on

      > The prime minister said the Palestinian Authority must hold an election in 2026 and commit to other democratic reforms

And if they elect Hamas, like the last election?

    18. >The prime minister said the conditions the Palestinian Authority must meet include holding an election and other democratic reforms.

He wants the west bank to be ruled by Hamas? Because that is exactly how the west bank would gets taken over by Hamas.

They would just run under a slightly different name if they couldn’t run as Hamas.
