Because imprisoning them at $12,000/mo will make his private prison buddies a lot richer than just housing them for $2k/mo.

Things weren’t dystopic and shitty enough, right? Fucking scumbag regime.

That has been tried in so many iterations since the beginning of time, and each time they try it, the result is a cruel and unmitigated disaster.

Don’t forget people with mental health issues can’t wait to be arrested for having ADHD…

    5. DigitalHellscape on

I hope the „and then they came for me“ of it all is becoming clearer to people who think they can wait this out. This is paving the way to criminalizing poverty and putting debtors in camps.

He will do one of two things, or maybe both

      1. Use them as slave labor, or let his friends use them as slave labor.

      2. Find ways to take away their citizenship so he can deport them.

Just wait the next move is going to be making up stories about all the ice agents being shot at and taco declares a state of emergency and “temporarily” stores all guns in America for the safety of our law enforcement

Right wing: What do we do about all the homeless people?

Left wing: What do we do about homelessness?

Leftist/Socialist: What do we do about poverty?

    10. The precursor to them „deporting“ homeless and mentally disabled to Sudan or Libya.

    11. Professional-Buy2970 on

A lot of people don’t know that the homeless, mentally ill and disabled were significant targets for genocide by the nazi regime. Their early efforts to round them up and put them in camps are identical to what we’re seeing now.

Yet society overall has such disdain for people who don’t have a home that they weren’t even properly recognized as victims. It’s the easiest group to visit brutality and lethal fascism on because no one cares about them.

THIS STORY IS BEING ALGORITHMICALLY BURIED

This order came out almost a week ago and it’s almost impossible to find any mention of it. This is a very well written article and I urge you to read every word. This is the most consequential edict in this Neverending nightmare we call 2025. It is the most insane nazi thing you will ever read

If I had to guess why the story is being buried, I would guess that it is way too big of a step in the frog boiling in a pot that has defined the trump existence in our political world. They need a few weeks to pass where it will be, oh I heard something about that weeks ago. Share this everywhere

      Here’s just a part of the actual order. Insane;

      >Shifting homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings for humane treatment through the appropriate use of civil commitment will restore public order.  Surrendering our cities and citizens to disorder and fear is neither compassionate to the homeless nor other citizens.  My Administration will take a new approach focused on protecting public safety.

    13. Ben_Pharten on

Making homelessness illegal sure is a way to solve it. God, how do we stop his administration from any further evil policies? I don’t think even Russia does this.

    14. Mr_Tort_Feasor on

If there were any conservatives left in the GOP, perhaps they could explain how the feds even have the jurisdiction to round up random homeless citizens on city streets.

    15. Lord-Velveeta on

First he went for the „brown people“, now the homeless and mentally ill… who will be their next Untermenschen sent to the camps?

Blacks? Muslims? Jews? Democrats? Republicans who don’t worship him enough? They are not building those concentration camps like Alligator Auschwitz for nothing.

    16. Random-Name-7160 on

      Called it.

When it becomes a crime to be poor, prisons become a major source of labour.

    17. The camps aren’t for me! They’re for Illegal immigrants!

The camps aren’t for me! They’re for immigrants!

The camps aren’t for me! They’re for homeless people!

The camps aren’t for me! They’re for gay and trans people!

The camps aren’t for me! They’re for the mentally ill!

The camps aren’t for me! They’re for dissenters!

      It’s the same fucking poem.

    18. I feel like we’re sitting helpless watching the “land of the free” being turned into a toxic wasteland and s-hole country in mere months.

It all goes back to the shitty bill they passed in July: $170 billion for „border enforcement and detention centers.“ Why work to make rent and housing more affordable when you can just jail anyone on the streets (or living in an RV) instead and let the prison industry make bank?

The people running our country right now are truly sick individuals…this is not America anymore, it’s the rich eating everyone for lunch, basically…

    20. > My Administration will take a new approach focused on protecting public safety

It’s not a new approach, it’s the same approach nearly every fascist autocrat has used.

    21. Realllyy speedrunning Nazi Germany. This was one of the first things they did to „clean up“ the country.

Immigrants, minorities, the LBGT, the homeless, and the handicapped (think about RFK Jr trying to make a list of autistic people) were rounded up for forced labor, sterilization, or worse.

That was only the beginning…and it’s been less than six months into MAGA’s term. A full third of the country is cheering for stuff like this.

It’s only going to get worse from here.

    22. WithMaliceTowardFew on

Scary times. His EO threatens more than just the homeless population though. People with mental illness or disability are at risk as well as LGBTQ people. Stay frosty!

I wonder how the conversation with a judge would go.

“Your honor I lost my job due to redundancy and AI. The bills added up fast and with my medical debt I was quickly evicted from my rental unit. Next thing I know in standing in front of you staring down the barrel of 4 years imprisonment.”

“Well son if you weren’t a criminal and owned land then we wouldn’t have to put you in prison for sleeping on land no one is using. It’s very illegal to sleep somewhere without someone else profiting off your sleeping. Max penalty!”

    24. Star Trek Deep Space Nine did a two parter episode on exactly this premise, except it was in 2024, so they were only off by about 12 months.

    25. I spent five years homeless in Florida before I moved over to Arizona to work at the Grand canyon.

You know how many people I hurt in that time? Fucking none.

Do you know how many times I was harassed, attacked, shot at with BB guns, chased away with a stick like a literal dog or spit on by civilians? Can you imagine what being in that position was like during the pandemic? Being seen as a literal plague rat instead of a suffering human being?

And that’s just the civilians. How do you think the sheriff’s and police in my Podunk Central Florida Town treated us?

It would literally be cheaper to buy a house or apartment for every single homeless person in America than it would be to continue treating it the way we are, and this particular strategy is just going to increase that cost. Institutionalization is extremely expensive and it has been quite literally proven to be cheaper to just house these motherfuckers.

Just give them a fucking place to live. We can afford it. Take all the taxes you need from me. I might not personally need that assistance anymore, but I know plenty of people who do. In no world is extreme police intervention the solution to this level of suffering. We arent your enemies, we were your neighbors. We just need help.

Fuck trump. He’s a fascist who rapes children.

    26. So the Sanctuary Districts from Star Trek will just be a year late. Neat.

Maybe there’s still hope for Irish unification.
