All Canada, and most countries, can do is wring their hands and utter weak platitudes because to do otherwise would be to „go against“ the US.

Let’s be real; what is happening in Gaza is genocide by starvation.

as someone whos family has been in Canada since the 1600’s, it should erode anyone belief and or trust in whatever Canada is. We sold weapons to the country doing the holocaust and knew we were doing it!

i’m outraged by what’s happening in Gaza and blame Netanyahu but this headline really peeves me. minority groups in Canada should first and foremost be Canadians and not bring the grievances of their homelands here. stop with the stupid culture wars. Canada is also home to many Jews who also need to have a sense of belonging and safety. the ‚envoy‘ needs to advocate based on facts and suffering of the Palestinian people, not her own sense of entitlement.

„Ottawa’s approach to the war in Gaza is eroding many Muslim-Canadians’ “sense of belonging” in this country, says the federal special representative on combating Islamophobia.“

      – if their ties to a religion and/or a far away land are larger than their ties to our secularly-governed nation, then maybe they should move along.

„This ongoing, horrifying situation is deeply, deeply damaging the sense of belonging that people feel,” Amira Elghawaby said in an wide-ranging interview with The Canadian Press.

      – …belonging to *where*? Absolute softball questions by the Canadian Press.

“This relates to dehumanization … of Palestinian life, of Muslim life.”

      – …by Israel. It sucks, but aside from military intervention or throwing Israel’s leaders in front of the ICC, Canada can do little.

„In the interview, Elghawaby said she doesn’t have the mandate or enough detailed information to say whether Canada is doing enough. She said she can only convey the feeling widespread in Muslim and Arab communities that Ottawa is dropping the ball“

      – Doesn’t have enough info = talking out of her ass.

„Elghawaby said Muslim communities want “every tool” proposed by international organizations put to use “to ensure compliance (with) international humanitarian law.”“

      – Which is why Muslim communities have been lobbying Canada hard to take a zero-tolerance stance on Saudi Arabia, Iran, and-wait, they haven’t been? So again, she’s talking out her ass.

    5. Muslims have been systematically dehumanized in western media since 9/11. Which is why platitudes in the face of a genocide by starvation fall so gently on the ears of many Canadians.

The more connection to Gaza, (whether it’s language, religion, or culture) the more rage when there’s yet another “it’s so terribly complicated” statement in the face of an operation to starve a population to death for the sake of Jewish supremacist lebenstraum

    6. As somebody who doesn‘t belong to the relevant cultural groups or have any religious beliefs, it’s interesting to be reminded of how they see it. I would never have thought to frame this as a Muslim issue or that they would feel solidarity with the Palestinians just because of their religion.

    7. I understand her feeling of helplessness and wanting someone somewhere to do something. But I don’t understand what they think Canada of all nations can do outside of what we’ve already done. We’ve condemned what’s happening, we’ve stated our position that we support a 2 state solution, we’ve sent whatever humanitarian aid we can. What more is there? Stopping arms sales I guess but in the end we’d be like a nothing blip on their need or purchases of arms. It’s the US that has the most influence on what happens there and with this administration nothing meaningful will happen because this President is incompetent and unfeeling. If he was as passionate about that conflict as he is about stopping people from using wind turbines maybe there’d be movement.

Religious groups deserve no sense of belonging beyond that of any other group of people. Less so if anything. Suffering of people is bad, their religion is irrelevant.
