The UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has condemned Iran’s sharp rise in executions, urging an immediate moratorium.
At least 612 people were reportedly executed in the first half of 2025, more than double the same period last year, with minorities disproportionately affected.
Many were sentenced for drug offenses or vague charges like “enmity against God,” often used to suppress dissent.
Türk warned that 48 people remain on death row, including 12 at imminent risk, and criticized trials lacking due process. He also called for Iran to scrap a new espionage bill that expands the use of the death penalty.
The most recent president of Iran sentenced some 30,000 people to death when the Ayatollahs took power.
For being political opponents of the regime or simply for being the “wrong” type of Muslim.
When he died in a helicopter crash last year, the UNHRC held a moment of silence in his hour.
Oh, and they gave Iran a committee chair position on a human rights subcommittee. And the same to Pakistan, which to this day executes religious minorities for “blasphemy” against Islam. They have one standing item on the agenda – Item 7 – to condemn Israel. They do *that* literally every single meeting for the last 20 years.
The UN “Human Rights” Committee is a joke. You can commit whatever atrocities you want, as long as your country funds terror groups to bomb Israelis they’ll give you a pass.
