the Islamic State – East Asia Province was officially founded in 2014 when the Abu Sayyaf Group pledged allegiance (bay’ah, an oath of allegiance) to the Islamic State in a video, they were formerly allied with Al-Qaeda but switched to ISIS due to their rising fame at that time so they can use it to their advantage.

Abu Sayyaf Group was founded in 1989 by Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani, the older brother of Khadaffy Janjalani, Abdurajak went to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet Union and the Afghan government during the Soviet–Afghan War. During that period, he is alleged to have met Osama bin Laden and been given $6 million to establish a more Islamic group drawn from the MNLF (the main Muslim rebel group at that time, 1970s).

In the early 1990s, MNLF became less radicalized leading to Abdurajak recruiting old radicalized members of the MNLF to form the Abu Sayyaf.
