Mandatory voting is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. If we’re going to do vote reform, that energy would be better spent pushing for proportional representation or some kind of ranked voting.
Were the people who voted yes forced to vote?
What would the result be, if we forced the people who chose not to vote in this poll, to vote in this poll?
If you force people to do it you know people are going to complain that the government is acting like a dictatorship, but at the same time I guess we are forced to complete the census form when received.
I personally don’t like the thought of forcing people to do their civic duty, but I like the idea of incentivizing it. Free pass to any national park maybe, or national museum (or whatever jurisdiction is proceeding anyways)
I only agree with mandatory voting because it generally benefits the political ideology I usually fall in line with.
Before this can be considered, there needs to be election reform with ranked choice and a none of the above option needs to be available.
Not voting is a choice, forcing those who choose not to participate (or care) to vote is kind of draconian tbh.
Some people prefer to not care about politics at all and are not informed on issues come election times. (I know, a shocker that 100% of people aren’t glued to their phones and slurping force fed media articles 24/7)
Forcing them to vote doesn’t solve any problems whatsoever. Do people think they’ll magically vote left wing / right wing or something?
They’re going to protest vote for dumb parties, just like they do in Australia. Joe Smith who’s never voted in his life isn’t going to show up (after being forcefully mandated) to the polls and vote Liberal or Conservative.
He’s going to vote Rhino party, anarchism, or communism or something dumb like that. It’s just a complete waste of everyone’s time.
