Do we know how M2 compared to assault rifles (StG44 and AK-47)?

M2 kicked around for decades when assault rifles started become mainstay, so there must be some comparisons made?

You could say M2 was an assault rifle but from pistol caliber perspective (not the only one, look at Finnish trials during the war).

I once heard standard procedure for the .30 carbine rifles was to shoot them until they went ‚click‘ because the ball rounds they used were fairly anemic. They’re not fast enough to cause significant hydrostatic shock with non-expanding ammo, and the projectiles weren’t long enough to cause significantly more damage if they happened to yaw. The rounds basically penciled through like a FMJ pistol round would.
