Just read the rules on the kind of people candidates need to get signatures from, oof…
Could they just focus on worker rights and public ownership, rather than identity? And that’s coming from a very left person.

This reads like a satire article. The NDP wonders why they’ve faded into irrelevance and nonsense like this is certainly part of it.
The federal NDP is a party saturated with idealists. They are not pragmatists. I get the thinking behind requirements like this, in the name of equity, but this is not how you build a better world.
The spirit and intent of quotas and limitations for specific identity group signatures is understandable in that you could want candidates that can demonstrate appeal to a representative group of Canadians. HOWEVER. In this current climate, they had to have known that these requirements would become the story, and that it would make it appear that identity is more important to the NDP than the top of mind issues for voters – cost of living, jobs, housing, and all things economic right now. It just makes them appear to have the wrong priorities and further risks their ability to connect with the working class and moderate Canadians who frankly don’t place identity issues high on their list of priorities.

These rules are hilariously tone deaf. They’re effectively saying „Yes, we are the identity politics driven student union party everyone said we were“. Do they seriously believe this is going to help them get elected anywhere they aren’t already? Good lord.
I’m going right down to mutual aid in my neighbourhood. Time to build a new political party because what the hell did I just read. I’m a bisexual Arab communist and even I know they’re going to hemorrhage votes being THAT strict around the characteristics of the people signing your petition. The only factors that should matter are age and geography, and even that’s discounting some likely special interest-backed progressive liberal candidate that tries to sell their ‘electability’ or some other nonsense.
