    1. >The Oscar winner recently appeared on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) during his “Eddington” press tour and remembered a director telling him on set early in his career that all he would ever be is simply a “character actor.” Phoenix’s co-star at the time compared him to a higher-profile actor, to which the director butted in and shot down the comparison.

      >“It’s kind of code for like, ‘You can’t really, like, you’re never going to really get there, but you’ll work,’” Phoenix said of the director’s “character actor” dig at him. “And that fucking pissed me off.”

      >But Phoenix added, “I ultimately appreciate it because it made me go like, ‘Well, how do I find that way? Like, how do I find more?’”

I suspect the director who called him that was implying that he’s a talented actor but his personality off-screen alienates enough people that he’ll never really be a successful leading man outside of arthouse and award-bait films.

(And yes, I do consider Joker an arthouse take on the character)

    3. Does anyone really enjoy watching a Joaquin Phoenix movie? I can’t think of a single character of his that I enjoyed spending 2+ hours with.

    4. I feel like “character actor” is a compliment. It means you are truly that person in the eyes of the viewer.

    5. Isn’t a non character actor like George Clooney or tom Cruise or something . Isn’t a character actor like you’re an actual actor that can act like a different character

He can dry his tears with hundred dollar bills. He’s probably not a leading man like he wants to be because he’s difficult to work with

Disparaging character actors? Someone about to get their tires slashed by Famed Character Actress and Fugitive from the Law Margo Martindale

Didn’t Joaquin also pull out of Todd Haynes’ new flick (which is now indefinitely shelved) a few days before shooting, effectively fucking the entire thing for everybody…

Ngl, love his work but he kinda seems like a bit of an asshole

This man has a well-earned reputation for being a thin-skinned, insecure, unprofessional jackass with multiple directors and peers, over many years.

      Maybe it’s you, bro.

I always took character actor to mean you appreciate them for their talents, a star is someone who I think you show up because they’re them. I don’t think either one is better than the other.

Character actor means a better actor. It means you embody the role so well, people forget the actor is acting.

Lead actors are the ones who are hugely famous, but they usually have a singular persona that they maintain both on and off screen.

And some actors Walk The Line.

Chill daddy. My jobs the same. I’m doing all the work, an all star and my boss totally depends on me. In my pmp review he said I needed to be more urgent and I got rated lower than I thought.
