The big differences with Quebec and Alberta in regards to their respective independence are :

Quebec has direct access to the sea, already owns major export/import port facilities.

Quebec exists in close proximity to some of the largest Canadian and American markets (Ontario, New York, Boston…). Over 117 million people live in regions linked to Quebec by highways, waterways and railroads in a radius of 600 miles of Montreal.

In a 600 miles of Calgary, you can count BC (5.7 million), Washington State (less than 8 million), Oregon (4.2 million), Saks (1.25 million), Manitoba (1.35 million), Wyoming (600k), Montana (1.14 million), Idaho (2 million), for a total of less than 25 million people and the road network that is very underdeveloped.

Because of the immigration system that allows Quebec to pick its immigrants from French speaking countries, Quebec has forged close relations with a number of countries (mostly former French colonies) that share similar legal and education systems. This has allowed Quebec to standardize higher education so a student can start a degree in Paris or Tunis and then finish in Montreal almost seamlessly and where Quebec students can do an internship, in french, in as many as 20 different countries.

And we are not even going to talk about Quebec having its own pension system, its own income tax collection agency and a host of other programs that Alberta let’s Ottawa manage on its behalf.

As it comes to their respective independence, Alberta is like an empty lot where some think about eventually building a house while Quebec is more like a fully furnished house.
