A less dogmatic view of what the Canadian Forces are for would serve us better. A large Construction Corps would contribute to the country’s defence in multiple ways, not just in disaster relief but also mitigating future disasters through the construction of infrastructure such as levees, rebuilding after disasters but also building new homes in normal times, providing training and skills to offset youth unemployment, and so on. If we’re going to blow the budget on military stuff, let’s make it useful.
