It blows my mind why this isn’t being talked about more. Carney campaigned on standing up to Trump, then turns around and shamelessly capitulates at every turn. The NATO spending target is 2%, and Trump just unilaterally decides to make it 5%, and Carney is now getting ready to gut our services to fork over that cash, the vast majority of which gets funnelled to US weapons manufacturers.
What’s next? What if Trump decides the spending target should be 10%? Then what? This isn’t about security, trade or diplomacy. This is extortion. And we have better options, yet this is the path Carney choses. This is a slap in the face to the millions of voters making sacrifices during this cost of living crisis to boycott US products, the voters that resurrected his party from the verge of #3 party status to being reelected.
I think its stupid that DOGE and Trump have somehow made fiscal responsibility a boogeyman.
Yes there is plenty to complain about and criticize with the DOGE and Trump approach – but its not an excuse to abandon all fiscal responsibility.
We can’t blow the budget up with debt for defence spending and infrastructure projects and not make some concessions in other areas. I think Carney has been pretty pragmatic about balancing these challenges and I’m glad he’s not just sacrificing the future fiscal health of the country entirely for our present needs and political climate.
