Matching tariffs *no matter how high they go* is really only good for headlines. The effect they have is not symmetrical. The only real countermeasure is diversifying trade away from the US, tariffs or not. Reducing our trade with the US by 20% would itself be a massive economic accomplishment.
We also need to upgrade our military since I can see them trying to use their army to force Canada to submission in a year or two
the way we counter tariffs is to move our trade to other countries. there is no single country with the economic power like the USA right now, but we can increase trade to the EU, Asias including India and China. it wont be easy but it will take away the power of the threat that Trump tries to yeild.
