Mit sechs Touristen pro Bewohner hat es das Gefühl, dass die Insel eher als Produkt behandelt wird als als Ort, an dem Menschen tatsächlich leben. Der Druck auf die Infrastruktur, die steigenden Lebenshaltungskosten und die Erosion der lokalen Kultur sind sehr reale Bedenken. Ich bin nicht gegen Besucher, aber ich wünschte, es gäbe nachhaltigere Grenzen. Es ist schwierig, zu Hause zu fühlen, wenn Ihr Zuhause ein ganzjähriges Urlaubsziel für alle anderen wird.

trust me when i say i can feel it. unfortunately it is world wide issue. leaders don’t want to do anything about it (tourist cap).
Absolutely. Problem is…..what are we going to do about it? Serious question. Can we like agree on a way forward?
And the tourist intensity is only going to get worse. In Sliema alone, there are over 1,500 new hotel rooms and 1 bedroom apartments (marketed mainly for short lets) currently under construction and in the pipeline. Similar numbers in St Julian’s, Swieqi, Gzira and 1000s more airbnbs all over the island. The government projects annual tourist arrivals increasing from 3.5 million to 4.5 million in a few years time.
Besides the absolute increase in numbers, Malta’s marketing as a party island is attracting the most disrespectful and most disruptive type of tourist in larger proportions than before. With lesser returns per tourist of this type.
In such a small island the impact of this will be felt in most localities at the expense of most people’s quality of life.
It is good that tourism contributes towards up to 25% of our economy and provides a good income source to many, however, as the infrastructural and social strain of increased numbers worsens, revising our growth strategy will become mandatory.
Increase the tourist tax to €5 per night so that there is enough money for waste collection, infrastructure and corruption!
