Carney made a solid move brushing Nate aside from being in cabinet.
I can see nate being a Trudeau 2.0 but for the NDP not the Liberals.
They really need to oust Crombie – she is useless and isn’t going to take the party anywhere but in the toilet. However, I think NES would be a mistake as leader too. He’s too divisive and has too much difficulty getting along with others to be able to hold the party together as a leader – the fact that every sitting MPP basically shit talked him in this article is proof of that. On top of that, he’s too far to the left of most of the party – him as leader would probably drive the center/center right elements of the party to the PCs, and even if he completely cannibalizes the NDP vote down to 2003/2007 levels, he probably has a hard ceiling of 30% or so.
I may get downvoted to all oblivion but I respect Nathaniel Erskine-Smith a lot.
I really believe he is in politics for the right reasons and really cares about people.
For me intentionality/mentality really matters. We have enough party insiders and loyalists that never question and or repeat the talking points ad nauseam.
I have disagreements with Nate but again I respect him for being a well intentioned individual not just a career politician.

Fully agreed. Erskine Smith continues to come across to me as fairly well meaning, but very naive and therefore easily misguided and led astray. He seems stuck in some kind of bubble and unable to really understand the reality of politics.
Kind of a „making the perfect the enemy of the good“ type of guy. He’s fine as a back bencher but giving him much of a voice doesn’t make the party a more broad tent, it just creates this kind of infighting and discord. When he was giving a cabinet position a lot of peoples eyebrows were understandably raised. The fact he acted shocked when that was temporary tells me he’s not very grounded. He is a terrible choice for a Ministerial role because he doesn’t know how to be a team player.

She lost her bloody seat. The party did better in the popular vote but it wasn’t because of her. She’s a drag. And keeping her around for when people get tired of Ford, sounds like the current Labor party in the UK whose PM is fairly incompetent.
N-ES’s shortcomings aside, I am also „tired of this crap“ because I would like to see the re-emergence of a genuinely progressive OLP instead of the warmed over ‚Ford-Lite‘ version of the party that has been served up as a so-called alternative in the last two provincial elections. There seems to be a prevailing sense among the OLP leadership that the party drifted too far to the left under Wynne and a centre-right approach is the only way to win back hearts and votes.
If Nate chooses to run again, he should step down as an MP. He had his chance to run for OLP leader while still on the federal payroll, this time he needs to resign.
I lost a lot of respect for NES when he became Trudeau’s most loyal soldier within caucus last year, if there was any time for a maverick, that would have been it. But that cannot discount from the fact that he is correct here, Crombie has to go.
It is rather worrisome to see every Liberal MPP rally around Crombie though, surely they can see the writing on the wall? For Poilievre you can kind of understand it because they can immerse yourself themselves in an echo chamber and pretend he’s popular. The number of Crombie supporters is in the dozens, there’s just no real support or enthusiasm there, so what are they pretending?
I guess there is a possibility they can turn around and rally around a new leader after Crombie, but I don’t see any type of desire for that. It seems the Ontario Liberal MPPs are happy enough just keeping their seats, and have no ambition for more. They can’t escape the loser mentality.
What exactly does Bonnie Crombie offer that she is beyond criticism? She was completely uninspiring in this past campaign, led the party to a third straight third place finish, lost her own seat, and seems to have no plan for getting into the legislature anytime soon. She’s also the oldest of the three main party leaders and is going to be 69 during the next election. The case for keeping Crombie is basically “it’s bound to be our turn again eventually so let’s not waste time with another leadership convention”.
It’s insane that the Liberals keep telling left-leaning people who vote for them to leave. Insane and out of touch. Wynne must have lost because she was too far to the left, so they blame the left. But why don’t we blame the centre-right for Del Duca and Crombie’s losses?
I’m an OLP member and donor and attended two meet the candidates functions leading up to the leadership convention — I talked to all the candidates and Bonnie Crombie was at the bottom of my list. For the life of me, I cannot comprehend my fellow Liberals voting for a Doug Ford facsimile. Voters like an alternative, not a copy, otherwise they vote for the devil they know.
OLP is addicted to failure I suppose. Nate is a very competent individual and I would far rather someone like him than Bonnie.
