You certainly wouldn’t want to hand anything over until the replacements *are received*…
What they need is loads and loads of PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles. And they need to manufacture them locally in Europe. And manufacture them 100m underground in bunkers, because what happens if war breaks out across Europe? The first to go is manufacturing capabilities by a ballistic missile barrage overloading any patriot defenses. Lockheed Martin’s production is maxed out to about 500 per year. Plus they charge cost plus 10x profit I imagine. 500 probably would only last a few months for Ukraine.
Anyone play WW3 Black Gold RTS game on PC? My favourite thing to do was to go as the Iraq team and overload the deployed US patriot on the other team with 3 scuds at once. That game had major limitations that could only fire one patriot missile at a time. So the attacker would win because it couldn’t fire more patriot missiles to hit the other missiles. But, same principle, you do need a lot of missiles to defend, and reload quickly.
5 systems are a big deal. Each Patriot system comes with six launchers.
