people are used to it is why

as some settlers in this sub like to point out extensively, there’s nothing we can do.

    2. We are but a collateral damage to the greater plans, simple as that. Which only serves to nationalist wanks and our tragedies

    3. Because there has been peace for half a century, and getting political justice isn’t worth the cost to anyone, including Cypriots, so there is a peaceful stalemate.

Peaceful stalemates get discussed in national fora, in backrooms and by academia. They don’t get discussed in world news every day.

Palestinians chose violent resistance, there hasn’t been a single decade when the death toll not in the thousands. It’s why it’s in the news.

When there is peace in Palestine nobody really gives a shit either. In fact the Palestinian cause gets eroded over time when there is peace: the Abraham accords sought out normalization between arab states and Israel, the west bank was being increasingly colonised by settlers. That’s why they went for October 7th, to get all eyes on Palestine again and cut chances of normalization between Israel and Arab states. They succeeded at tremendous cost of human life, a price Cypriots aren’t willing to pay, because they have a lot to lose (and Palestinians don’t).

I do think that attention should be given to an ongoing killing of 50+k people man especially when its next to us being done by our western ally’s puppet, this does not mean no attention can be given to the cyprus problem.

    5. Because such problems are only a victim’s headache. World media stopped talking about the annexation of Crimea after less than 4-5 years, for example.

    6. They would start questioning why the UK has substantial chunks of Cyprus territory as military bases. Hence, it’s better to keep Greeks and Turks fighting, and a the UK as a “guarantor” on an Island.

    7. According-Quarter764 on

This is the worst comparison ever, people in gaza are getting bombed, ethnic cleansed, and starved. In cyprus we live normal just a fight over land.

    8. Emptysoulshithead on

Before Oct 7, was the media really tackling the Palestinian cause ?
Just like the annexation of Palestine happened in the past, and the subject died , despite the fact that conflicts didnt stop throughout the years, the same goes for every annexed country .
Fortunately, there is no death toll now in Cyprus, i know a lot of other problems are happening , but i guess it s much more worth now covering a current humanitarian crisis until it stops .

    9. pathetic_optimist on

The point of this cartoon seems to be to make the Cypriots resent the attention paid to the Gaza genocide.

This is a pathetic piece of propaganda, as we can all see the horror unfolding so close to Cyprus and we feel all the stronger having had War and Ethnic Cleansing imposed on us in the past.

    10. Mountain_Savings_351 on

I understand the lack of coverage of the Cyprus issue is upsetting, but dude, people in Gaza are literally getting bombed, children are dying

    11. BuenaventuraReload on

I wasn’t even born 51 years ago, lmao

Do you see anyone talking about South Ossetia? Transnitria? Crimea before 2022?

Do you think people would talk about Gaza if there wasn’t a war?

What silence lol, it was half a century ago

    12. Suburban_Andy on

Cyprus is considered to be the boy who cried wolf too many times. EU and UN have facilitated talks for a few decades and the two parties involved didn’t meet eye to eye.

    13. „Breaking News: Cyprus situation remains unchanged for 51st year in a row“

That’s why. News is about new developments and change. Not about things that remain unchanged and don’t cause immediate suffering. These are the kind of things you might see a magazine article about, but not a newspaper headline.

I’ve been to Cyprus – both sides – and the situation felt anything but tense. The Estonian-Rusdian border felt worse even long before the current war. and that was not newsworthy either at the time.

    14. linobambakitruth on

Sure, lets compare an ongoing humanitarian disaster with the result of an invasion back in the 70s that resulted in a political deadlock, but otherwise no ongoing hostilities and no further casualties.

      >The illegal invasion and occupation of Cyprus manages to stay in the shadows.

The only way for this to end is to convince the Turkish public to end the occupation. You’re instead waiting for outside help, which isn’t really going to come, like how many years it’s been? You’ve got to establish talks with Turkey directly, conduct propaganda campaigns highlighting the material and political cost of the occupation, how it could be better used to serve them, etc. Instead you’re just sitting and waiting for someone to care.

    15. It insane that you compare those two.
I don’t remember Turkey barricaded whole Cyprus and controlled the borders so that anyone inside it get killed by malnutrition (aka hunger)
If it would be a consolation to you no one bats an eye to Gaza (including me) as well.
It is a wrong use of a meme.

    16. Battlefleet_Sol on

Hello neighbor. We did not flatten your cities like the Israel did in gaza.

or we didn’t blockade the island completely and take control of things like electricity, water and flour.

There is no mass starvation in cyprus.

at least hundred thousand people have died and are dying as a direct result of starvation and Israeli bombs. We didn’t do anything like that in Cyprus.

We could blitz the south but we didn’t

so two situations is not same

Nowadays, the only groups still talking about Turkey’s occupation of Cyprus are:

      – Greek middle-aged right-wing nationalists who believe the solution is for the Greek army to invade Cyprus, liberate the island from the Turks, and reunite it with Greece.
      – Greek Cypriots who lost loved ones during the events of 1974.
      – Foreign pro-Israeli & pro-Russian troll/bot accounts on Twitter who use Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus solely for „Whataboutism“ in an attempt to provoke supporters of Ukraine & Palestine.

Others generally either do not care about the situation, do not acknowledge it at all, or are frustrated that the Turks did not complete their goal and take the rest of Cyprus. It doesn’t help that the Greek Cypriots‘ rejection of Annan’s plan ended any future chance to solve the Cypriot problem, thus it turned into a frozen conflict.

    18. Do you think that turkey is doing Active genocide for many years in cyprus? Do you think that turkey is actively bombing hospitals and schools and making cypriots starve to death?

    19. – There is a UN peacekeeping force in place.

      – There is no active bloodshed, no active conflict.

      – People can go back and forth, cross between sides.

      – There is little risk of further violent escalation.

      – The solution is roughly clear for everyone: Bizonal Bicommunal Federation. It’s just about details that will convince both sides.

      – Maximalist demands of the sides are irreconcilable so noone wants to waste too much time on this, so they just wait for the time these irreconciliable demands fade out.

      – When these irreconciliable demands are dropped, it will have some political cost and no leader wants to carry it, so they keep posturing even though they know well it won’t happen.

    20. As terrible as the occupation of Cyprus is, there’s a genocide ongoing in Gaza right now.

    21. One is heaven for tourists and rich people hiding their money. The other one is the closest thing to hell you can think of.

    22. abudfv20080808 on

If you start a war then you will get mainstream media attention for some time. Do you need it?

    23. ifkidsrantheairport on

Nobody has been killed in Cyprus over this since 1974 versus ongoing massacres in Gaza and Ukraine in the hundreds of thousands

    24. el_argelino-basado on

Cyprus is a very frozen conflict as far as I know, not as horrible as the genocide in gaza and the open war in ukraine

    25. Even tho it’s an ongoing issue and a very serious one for the one million living in the free side and about half a million on the occupied side. It’s at a stalemate and no significant progress has been made against or towards resolution. People won’t pay attention to a matter that’s pretty much on ice. Gaza is a hot issue at the moment and a genocide is taking place as we even discuss this. Even tho we are occupied, no one is dying at the moment. 🙏

    26. 1AverageGamer on

In 51 years people will not give a shit about Gaza either. Plus there was no social media or social activists (at least to this extent) back then to create a fuzz

    27. Didn’t a ton of Israelis arrive on Cyprus, you and Palestinians have common enemies

    28. ComradeAleksey on

The BBC had it’s crew *“randomly“* on a field waiting for the invading forces and you expect them to talk about it?

    29. Occupation of southern part of Serbia, Kosovo and Metohija, by arnauts and nato.

    30. LowCranberry180 on

With due respect there was a peace plan in 2004 and the Greek side opposed it. A lost opportunity.

    31. I mean even Cypriots don’t care anymore. They go to the occupied land and buy groceries and gas because it’s cheaper, also there was a mural that wrote “never forget” which has now been altered to “forget”. When Cypriots don’t care why would anyone else?

    32. Unfortunately for you guys, antisemites still haven’t found a way to blame Jews for your situation.

Hold on tight, maybe in the next 50 years.

    33. Breaking news! Cyprus is still on a 51 year stalemate, nothing happened, there’s no tension, no one got hurt, people are having barbecues and drinking beer, Turkish Cypriots are buying ikea furniture in Nicosia, Greek Cypriots are filling their cars over in the North. Corrupt politicians on both sides are filling their pockets.

      We will keep you updated!
