Usually at the end of the night my wife and I relax in bed and turn the off the TV. I find what on the internet(Reddit rabbit holes) and she enjoys her tic toc. I think late night talk shows can’t compete with that because, I can always review clips later.
So, I think live sports will keep linear television alive (thank God, because it’s where I work), but I often wonder how TV can be saved otherwise.
One of the most critical elements of democracy is localized, unbiased news. And it has the ability to exist, it just got swallowed up and liquidated… But why? It’s because people lost faith in honest journalism, rightfully so when all these 24 hour news networks and infinite competitors sprung up and gave people catered news.
But how do you fix that? You somehow have to take the capitalism out of news, treat it as a public service, and you have to also get people to actually want that content instead of the content that is tailor made to give them what they want.
TV and local media is in horrible trouble and without it we’re going to move further and further away from a well informed, functional, honest democracy… So what do we do? Seriously, any ideas? This is my passion and I have no answers
The show may or may not have been financially successful. But the only way to make sense of the timing of the announcement is that the FCC approval was dependent on the show getting cancelled. Now let’s see how long Trump can go before outright admitting he is responsible.
going by Nielsens the ONLY thing that has viewers on network tv … is 1st responder dramas & sports, thats it …. and they’re starting to lose their hold on 1st responder …. bc lot of streamers r starting that same genre
Popular taste in genres of music change over the decades. Why is it shocking that taste in TV show formats change? Sitcoms used to be king, now the 8 episode series seems to be king. Well, long-form podcasts that deep dive into a topic the host is informed about are king now over the boilerplate five minute fake laugh with a celeb conversation format of old school late night. Is it a bad sign for tv? Maybe, but it’s more about content not fitting what’s in vs the medium imo.

Either way – it’s bad. If it’s money, that means the c-suite of broadcast television makes millions of dollars and continues to fail. If it’s politics, so much for the 1st amendment.
The fact that people are making excuses is why America is so far down in the shitter. This is another perfect example of the whole system being a joke that fucks us.
What’s unfortunate is that while I personally never cared for Colbert, he went after Trump for years so this is honestly Trump getting the last laugh
