What’s funny about this data is that since 1991, Canada has been below Spain, and ranked toward the bottom. I don’t think this is a question of it *now* being a thing considering how far this stretches back as a pattern
Because 1 out of 4 people here is a gig worker, 1 is unemployed, 1 is retired, and the other one had cost of living increase 10x faster than their salary over the last 20 years, so they quietly quit 5 years ago.
The qualifiers that have to be added on every few months is getting impressive. Since GDP stopped being true, they went to GDP per capita. Now it’s GDP per employed person. What will be coming in two months, GDP per person born between January and February who doesn’t celebrate Bastille Day?
It’s pretty easy to see why. Just go through a mall and watch all the eye rollers and it’s not my job types. Youngsters who probably don’t understand what gdp is or why it’s important.
Same experience I’ve seen in service businesses like auto repair or computer service. If it wasn’t for the old timers and a few of the youngsters who understand about getting things done the country would grind to a halt. Our ancestors knew how to build a life starting with nothing when they landed in Canada. I don’t know what happened since then. Both set of my grandparents immigrated to Canada and drilled into me and my cousins how to start with nothing and build a life. If it wasn’t for new immigrants coming to Canada our gdp would be lower.
Well, Canada has 5 million temporary foreign workers and international students working at minimum wage jobs. Tim Hortons is basically the highest skill level the Canadian economy can produce lol
From a statistical standpoint GDP per capita is a poor measure of an economy.

I’m struggling to understand these stats on GDP per person, per capita, per employed person, etc.
As I remember when Stephen Harper was PM, Tories would parade these numbers and say how amazing and awesome Canada was! Despite many economic anxieties that existed then.
Today, we get similar stats on GDP and we’re told these economic anxieties are new and horrifying. As if we suddenly became poor over night.
From the media discourse, I’ve heard everything from Canada being incredibly rich and an economic powerhouse, to we’re on the brink of poverty, poor, with the worst economy in the OCED.
So what are the facts???
As I find it rather garbage when I hear these numbers of “we’re poorer than Mississippi and Alabama!”
Yet the quality of life, economics, etc, in those 2 states are pretty poor. While Canada excels in many fields, while those states are usually in the basement.
