>Ministers are planning to close loopholes that could allow foreign money to influence UK elections, with a crackdown on illegitimate donations through shell companies and new tests on political donors.
About a year ago: [Labour given £4m from tax haven-based hedge fund with shares in oil and arms.](https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/labour-given-4m-from-tax-haven-based-hedge-fund-with-shares-in-oil-and-arms/)
They need to take action against themselves or it’s just going to be seen as a partisan legislation.
>I’m shocked, shocked to find that foreign donations are influencing politicians here!“
„Your free Taylor Swift tickets, sir.“
Tighen? Yeah sure i belive that.
You’d think it’d be banned considering how ban happy our government is and this subject is something the public would support being rendered illegal.
Murdoch and others have far too much power over this country.
Wonder if this will hamper the Reform think tank set up to attract 25million in donations and policy ideas from US Christian conservatives ?

Just stop allowing lobbying ffs. Its making democracy a farce and making our left leaning parties very right leaning by action.
Reposting a comment that seems to apply more and more:
The UK is a high illegality, low enforcement country.
Our answer to everything now seems to be to pass a law irrespective of whether it’s ever enforced.
Maybe stop all donations?
They’re just a fancy way of bribing politicians anyway.
Will this be one of those where months after an election is complete, the investigation concludes and hands out a token fine?
For example „here’s a $100m donation.“
Months after the election concluded you shouldn’t have has that donation for your campaign, here’s a £500,000 fine.
Yeah, right.
I’m sure they’re voting away the giant pots of money many of them enjoy.
Holy Shit, NO donations at all from anyone, ever, for any reason, should influence British politics and or elections, leave that government sponsored bribery shit for the Americans.
This country is addicted to misery and pessimism. This is a good thing, a good tightening of laws around corruption, and the majority of comments are still unhappy
Is it going to include Soros and protesters he is paying for?
They should never exist in the first place.
Compromised is compromised.
No foreign donations.
No gifts of any kind to politicians, especially members of the govt.
Only those with citizenship should be allowed to vote. Commonwealth international students can vote after being here for three months…
