I’m wondering if Melania is mentioned or someone else like Roy Cohn or his kids. I think he could deflect it from himself, but there has to be something else going on too. They are using it as leverage and blackmail against people, but I’m starting to wonder who Trump would want to protect so deeply.
This vote may become the one thing that these lawmakers bring home to their constituents for the upcoming election if there will still be one.

To give Massie’s credit, his bill seems mostly better. The Democrat one was two short paragraphs and was an amendment to the Genius Act/a Defense funding bill, rather than a stand alone one. Massie’s is more detailed, describing every kind of document that must be released, blocking out several wiggle room the government could use (such as explicitly blocking „embarrassment“ from being a valid reason for blocking it’s release). Massie’s version blocks the release of victim information or child porn, although it also allows redaction of „information specifically authorized under criteria established by an executive order to be kept secret in the interest of national defense or foreign policy and are in fact classified pursuant to such Executive Order.“ That seems like it could give way too much wiggle room to block way too much of the files, although it also requires summary and justifications for every redaction.
Still, we should all be calling our representatives to support it.
Like this administration would follow any legal requirement to do so. They have ignored the law and even direct decisions from judges time and time again.

Is „release the files“ a precedented thing? Wouldn’t it be better (if the AG weren’t corrupt) to keep the files under DOJ custody and use them to investigate and prosecute people who committed crimes?
Someone should put together a timeline and Venn diagram of how everything overlaps and is connected.

I think we’ve forgotten about Trump’s magical ability to declassify, and presumably classify, any documents, just by thinking about it.
Reading the Massie vote, it quite literally says that anything in any documents can be redacted by Executive Order. So they „release“ it and Trump basically edits it. Everyone wins. Hurray.
Dems should be focused on nothing but this for the next… however long it takes to get them released.
Unless it passes by a veto-proof majority in both houses, it’s kind of pointless.
I’ll admit to having voted for him if he gets these files released.
