So we’re giving special protections to islam? That is extremely dangerous.

It’s less the actual definition that might be applied than the interpretation of the definition. If even a little ambiguous, there’ll be attempts to stretch the definition to use it as a blasphemy law.
It’s creeping religious influence.

Wow labour. It already feels taboo to speak up against some of the problems we face in society that come with Islam.
They really do want a reform term, don’t they?

I must have missed that bit in the Labour manifesto. Here’s an idea. Spend your efforts on the promises that got you elected

Public criticism and rejection of any religion should be 100% guaranteed by the law. There is zero reason for any religion to get special treatment over any other. I should be free to make fun of, ridicule, criticise, object to, laugh at and generally say what I want about any religion. Is it respectful, no, but so what? Is it kind, no but so what? Is it harmful, definitely not and we are sliding into a dark place here. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and this particular religion just takes, and shouts, takes, and shouts…

I wonder if they’ll do the same for Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, Pagans, Wiccans, Jedi, Athiests, Scientologists, and any other groups who have beliefs or lack thereof?

We could ask what is so special about Islam, that we as a society should have an Islamophobia law imposed on us.
Nobody is asking for a Sihkphobia law, a Hinduphobia law, a Bhuddaphobia law, Zoroastrianophonia law.
Even at the peak of free movement, when there were nearly 1 million Polish nationals in the UK, the Polish community nor lawmakers or law enforcement ever raised the issue of “ Polophobia „.
But the question isn’t what is “ special “ about Islam and its adherents.
It’s more, what is “ unique“ about Islam and its adherents.
Everyone knows how this would turn out. It’s like having a card game and giving only only one player a special platinum plated trump card.

Yep that’s fine, if we can go with Christopher Hitchens’ definition please.
We should be free to criticise Islam without being accused of racial hatred.

Why doesn’t labour just change their name at this point to the British Islamic Party

If you want to see how normalised anti-Muslim bigotry is in this country, go replace the word “Islam” with “Judaism” in the spiciest comments here and see how indistinguishable they are from posts on Stormfront.
For example:
>Judaism is the greatest threat to the UK. Despite only making up a small minority of the population, they have already brought immense pain and suffering to huge amounts of the country. The government needs to act fast to quell the rise of Judaism, rather than bringing in blasphemy laws.
Reddit or Stormfront?

I didn’t realise the Daily Mail was suddenly taken seriously on this sub. So in order to find out more about this, I had to read the article, so for making me dirty my hands I hope OP wakes up this morning with a hive of bees in his underwear.
This article does seem to be a lot of innuendo.
Here’s the key passage:
> Labour commissioned the work to devise a ’non-statutory‘ definition of Islamophobia in a what it says is a move to combat anti-Muslim abuse.
> But there are fears it could lead to a blasphemy law by the back door and stifle legitimate criticism of Islam.
This is it.
Labour commissioned this committee.
And other people are having fits of the vapours for no reason at all. Including responders here who clearly didn’t read the article, or were duped by its sensationalism.
An explosion of bots. And this shit rag article was only posted half an hour ago. Amazing

You lot in here getting all fluffed up over a daily mail article. As if there isnt a textbook definition in a dictionary that explains what Islamophobia is.
Perfect opportunity to dismantle and criticise the legitimacy of IHRA definition of antisemitism, which is doing all the stuff most of you are complaining about, but instead it’s going the bitch route of muh freeze peach!
