It’s still obviously not a wonderful place to fight, but 80 years ago the place still had old-growth forest with interlocking roots that were hidden three feet deep in leaves that were seething with vermin. So you couldn’t dig and you couldn’t walk off the paths without making a huge racket.
My father worked with one of [Merrill’s Marauder](https://web.archive.org/web/20060212200210/http://www.ranger.org/rangerHistoryWorldWarIIMerrillsMarauders.html)s, who had fought on these insane long raids deep into the forest behind enemy lines. The guy claimed he did most of his killing with a length of piano wire. They’d set up two-man teams along the length of a path and as an enemy patrol passed, the piano-wire guy would jump out and garrote the last guy in line. The other guy’s job was to catch the head before it made a bunch of noise falling into the leaves.
The vision of total success was to bag the whole patrol without firing a shot, although I don’t know if they ever pulled that off.
When this guy got out of the hospital back in the US (almost all of the survivors were fighting [multiple tropical diseases at the same time](https://web.archive.org/web/20030528171441/http://history.amedd.army.mil/booksdocs/wwii/CrisisFleeting/bookfive.htm)), he was as crazy as a shithouse rat, and to reassimilate with society he had a two-man escort of NFL tackle sized MPs whose job was to grab and subdue him if anyone committed a death penalty offense against the Marauder, like saying he was too thin or bumping him while passing on the sidewalk. But he got along with my dad okay fifteen years later, so I guess he sorted it out.

That was a crazy bid bang for a small IED. But, I’m more shocked at how well dug in they are. I only know a little about this conflict. But I had no idea it was static enough for them to be digging trenches.
