If a Chinese ship builder was good enough for the east it’s good enough for the west coast. That is where the issue should begin and end.
The issue here isn’t China; the same backlash would have happened — indeed, *has* happened in the past — with ferries built in Europe.
This issue here is that the government has to decide whether the purpose of spending money on infrastructure is to, you know, *have infrastructure*, or if infrastructure programs are really just ways to create unionized jobs. For a billion dollars, we can either get four ferries or get two ferries and hand money to politically well-connected unions. The former is definitely better when it comes to building a stronger Canada, but the latter may well win more votes in the short term.
(This isn’t just a Federal issue either. One of the first things done by the current BC NDP government was to enact a regulation prohibiting construction workers from participating in publicly funded projects unless they belonged to a union with a history of donating to the BC NDP.)
