Its very apparent that the tech giants and social media companies couldnt give two shits about the harm they do to children. Meta were warned multiple times about hiring psychologists to help specifically target children with addictive content.
A blanket ban in schools seems like a pretty effective way of ensuring that kids have a good chunk of hours in a day where their heads arent bombarded by weaponised shite
How many schools don’t have phones banned in the uk because all in my area do? At my second school you have it turned of in your bag or Nokia like phone and if it went of it was confiscated and your parents had to collect it the next day.
Having grown-up when there were still a few families that didn’t even have a landline and even then it was possible to reach a parent there is zero need for a child to have a phone whilst in school.
Parents would call the school if there was a serious problem and the school would phone parents if there was a serious problem. If both parents worked they’d ask for an employers number in addition to home number, if they didn’t have a phone then it’d be a work/neighbour/relatives number.

Can they just not give their kids phones? Or at least let them take them to school. 🤷♂️
Banned IN schools I’m totally up for, put it in a pouch that blocks signal totally fine with.
Banning phones altogether, with them not being allowed on site going to or from school is a safety concern.
There is a school near us that wants to ban phones on the way to and from school, they have announced it in the press, all it’s going todo is invite people to snatch kids/harass kids as they know that the children have no way to call for help.
Instead of banning them in schools, when schools generally already do a good job of banning them, why not ban parents from buying their children smartphones. That’s the kicker.

What relevance does it having happened on school grounds as opposed to at home have here? Banning phones in schools won’t prevent this, lmfao. At this point they’re just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.
Without meaning to be a complete tech novice… how hard would it be to block internet/cellular access to all phones within the school grounds without some kind of temporary code that enables it (ideally so teachers and students that have the need can still use them when required)
Im assuming such a thing is possible, yet expensive and therefore unlikely?
It’s sad that it’s necessary really. I was in school for basically the entire time phones developed from being brick Nokias right up to 4G iPhones, and we didn’t really have the issues that people have today. Was mostly dicking around with games and stuff, or poking each other on Facebook. There was a couple of cases of bullying and stuff but it was not prolific at all, and people weren’t anywhere near as image obsessed. Certainly no one was trying to get famous (that was for Youtube). But social media brain rot has determined we can’t afford our own children the same freedoms we enjoyed.
When I was in school they banned pogs, how did smartphones managed to escape this.
I can absolutely guarantee that his kids will be lucky if they are allowed access to the internet never mind a smartphone when they reach 18 and they’ll have absolutely no social life as they’ll likely have very little way of contacting friends outside of school.
I understand that social media and unfiltered internet access are not exactly 100% safe for kids but at the same time kids are going to come across social media and the internet at some point in their life. Also, apps like Snapchat allow kids to communicate with other kids in a world where they are less likely to be allowed out or allowed to go far enough to meet other kids.
Part of the problem is the parents, some will agree with the ban. Others will go into total meltdown and scream at staff for taking a phone off their kids.
Sadly I think a law like this is needed to deal with shit parents.
They were banned 20 years ago when I was in school, how are we still talking about banning phones.
Parents need to parent, start fining them for being naff at it.
