I can’t read the article, because it’s behind a paywall, but I disagree with the premise in some ways. Carney’s a little more like a Paul Martin with more acuemn than a Jean Chrétien.
For one, Carney is all about „Elbows Up.“ Chrétien would have had his middle finger up in this Trump situation. He was pragmatic, yes, but not afraid to break with the Americans and do things in a boldly Canadian way. Carney is probably still getting his feet under him the role and that may eventually be where he ends up but very few people can stand up for Canada in the way Chrétien had to during his term. From the 1995 refereendum on Québec separation to his split with Bush on the 2003 Iraq War, Chrétien cut his own path.
Chrétien helped finish off Crown Corps that Mulroney started destroying, like Air Canada. He destroyed critical government infrastructure and laid the ground work for the housing crisis my generation is now struggling with. But they think we are too young to know that history so they’re banking on the good vibes that Chrétien conjures up when they think about 90s nostalgia.
I’d love some counter examples of when “fiscal conservatism” in the vein of “slash budgets and sell off public infrastructure” has benefited the public in the longer term. Because i haven’t seen it play out that way for my entire life.
Exactly! It’s odd that people forget that the libs could be pretty „fiscally conservative“…in fact they’re better at it than the PCs
