People have been blaming the federal government about housing for too long now. People need to start holding their provincial governments accountable for failing to address housing so egregiously. Unfortunately, in some of the most pronounced areas of the housing crisis, we have under 50% of voters casting a vote in provincial elections.
Under 50% of voters cast a vote in the last two Ontario provincial elections. If they are frustrated about housing costs, they sure aren’t making their voices heard at the provincial level. Ford has had multiple terms now, and he has done next to nothing to address the cost-of-living in Ontario. Even immigration numbers are negotiated between the provinces and federal government, so it’s not like they should have had an easy scapegoat their either.
The same thing happened in Nova Scotia. Under 50% of Nova Scotians cast a vote in the provincial election, but the province has some of the worst housing costs and poverty rates in the country. It has no business being that expensive to live there. However, Houston hasn’t been around as long as Doug Ford has, so he should probably have a bit more time to address the issue.
Doug Ford has been in power for eight years, if he wanted to make big moves on housing, he would have done so already.
On development charges, they have skyrocketed under his watch, likely representing the biggest tax hike on housing in Canadian history. Despite his supposed hatred of taxes, he has done nothing to bring them down. Why? Because that would mean picking a fight with mayors who support him come election time and spending money he would rather waste on election handouts and pointless tax cuts.
He’s also at his heart a suburban NIMBY, which means he wants more housing, just not anywhere near him or his voters. That’s why he’s avoided real action on exclusionary zoning and instead nearly blew up his own government trying to carve up the Greenbelt.
Why conservatives put any faith in Ford on housing after so much time is beyond me. He’s an incompetent fool.
He’s had the power to improve healthcare but has only made it worse.
If there is something you can obtain through affluence, don’t expect Doug to make it easier for the poor.
Even if I believed he had that power, which I totally don’t, he’d never do it. How else can his buddy’s make enough money to pay him his share?
