I was visiting Shanghai for a conference at Fudan back in the 2000’s. I vividly recall seeing a white van with no plates and a dozen men sitting in the back with masks on driving by the University. It was chilling. But that’s where we are in the US today.

But they’re wearing their chosen garb, JC Penney jeans and sneakers, congregating in air conditioned courthouse hallways. These ICE individuals gather together and crystallize into the most delicate snowflakes.
Good. They should be miserable. Anyone taking joy in a job where they are rounding up people outside of the courthouses where they are legally using due process deserves to rot. Though for every one person with a conscience who is miserable as an ICE agent, there are at least one or two racist, fascist tyrants living out their dreams.

Their workforce has been salivating for years to act like they are now. They aren’t miserable at all! They’re doing what they’ve always wanted to do, and now they get to do it with impunity and anonymity, and with more money than ever.

ICE was founded in 2002 as part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 post 9/11. ICE was initially envisioned as an agency that would target transnational organizations domestically. Its operating budget in 2003 was $3 billion.
We need to repeal the Homeland Security Act of 2002. It created redundant agencies that are no longer serving the rules they were founded for. It was supposed to be an administrative body that helped streamline communication between intelligence and domestic law enforcement. It was never meant to be a domestic police force with a budget approaching $200 billion.
There is nothing ICE does that a combination the FBI and CBP cannot do. If we just return Airport Security and Coast Guard to DOT and end DHS & ICE we’d save a Trillion dollars over tens years. REPEAL THE HOMELAND SECURITY ACT OF 2002!!!

If I had a friend that was friends with someone that worked for ICE they would no longer be my friend either.

I consider myself to be an empathetic person. In fact, I have been accused of cutting people too much slack.
I am unable to feel sorry for these people. What they are doing is morally bankrupt. The only honorable thing to do is quit.
I understand they have families to support and bills to pay. But I would rather be homeless than provide this example to my kids. That is not hyperbole. The disdain and inhumanity with which they are treating their fellow human beings will leave a mark. Their kids will have to work through this when they are old enough to understand. That’s a horrible burden to place on someone you love.
And now they are basically admitting that dangerous people are actively and intentionally *not* being pursued. Just so they can lurk outside of courthouse to nab people who are complying with what we’ve told them to do.
Remaining in their jobs makes them complicit. I suspect there are those who fully support what is happening. In some regards, they are less guilty than the people who know it’s wrong and do it anyway.
They should be miserable. It’s good that they’re miserable. Shame is an important check on antisocial behavior, and because the republicans in congress have none, it’s up to the rest of us to let it govern our actions.
Be ashamed when you do shameful things, it’s healthy.
