Before we cut taxes please can we cut the horrendous business rates these companies pay to energy suppliers?
Id much sooner these energy suppliers made slightly less profit than our government get less tax money.
If no one can afford to go out it doesn’t matter how much business rates drop.
I go to about 1 pub a year… I hope it’s not that one!
£6.10 for a pint at the village one near me.
£5.25 for a coke, also the new owners have ruined it .
No chance I’ll ever do back at those prices .
A local brewery bought our local. £3.80 for a pint of nice IPA. It’s always busy.
Most pubs I’ve seen have been demolished and turned into flats with landlords reaping in a big pay day. The only thriving ones are near football clubs, city centres or niche suburban community ones and they’re always busy.
They’re closing because people don’t go to pubs as often any more. Socially they’re not as important as they once were, despite the fact we act like they are whenever we see a story like this. We shouldn’t do anything about it. The requirements and society changes and that’s fine.
There’s a pub near me that recently changed hands, the new owners are charging for a tribute act event happening early next year. Doubt they’ll make Christmas.

One pub per day will close but the number of licensed premises is always increasing. There are 224,000 pubs and licensed restaurants in England and Wales, up from 222,000 in 2022. It’s almost as if one pub closes and another opens.
I’m surprised reform and the like never big up the cultural difference with pubs and immigrants, that eastern Europeans (anecdotally) seem to prefer just grabbing tins from the shop and drinking on the street
Old pubs are closing, but I live near an independent brewery who have their own on site bar and it’s always rammed.
Less people go to the pub and socialise. Back in day you’d be struggling for a seat and if you didn’t get there early enough, then you’d be standing up all evening. Lot’s of people would rather drink at home with friends if they do drink.
There’s not as many people drinking alcohol either. People are saying it’s because young people can’t afford it but that’s total nonsense. If they can afford other items, then they can afford 1 pint of larger. It’s just that they aren’t interested in drinking alcohol.
Pub culture is just not cool anymore.
The pub companies are still making bank. But they screw the tenant landlords that it’s not sustainable for a lot of them. Tax cuts will just lead to greater profits for the pub companies and not impact the people doing the work.
Closing because of pub companies selling shite beer.
For the past few years, people have diversified their hobbies and feee time more.
Them closing can also be because we’ll times are changing and we don’t need that many of them anymore
People seem to think that pubs are closing because we cant afford it. And whilst that might be partially true, I think its also because theres just loads of other shit to do.
My grandparents went to the pub all the time because they 1) had not much else to spend money on 2) no other way of communicating with their mates
I go to the pub less because 1) theres loads of other shit to do, stuff out the house like bars, restaurants, attractions etc. and stuff in the house like gaming which just wasn’t an option for them 2) I can talk to my mates all day via phone, online gaming etc.
