I believe the mechanical shark kept breaking down, so he was forced to use it relatively sparingly, which was later praised as a tactic that raised the tension.

Aw his mom seemed like a lovely person. He spoke about how much of a free spirit she was.
Thats not surprising. If I remember correctly he sunk his life savings into the movie when the studio said no to giving him more money. He obviously made it back and then some but I believe he bet everything on the movie succeeding.
