I think as an Armenian that would have been amazing and today we could have been a unified state.
Yes I know that religion does not always mean unity. For example, the eastern Roman empire and Georgia belonged to the same church, but that didn’t stop Constantinople from oppressing Georgia and meddling in her affairs, but I feel like there would have at least been a shared foundation to build some sort of common identity upon.
One thing that is often not mentioned is that the beginnings of Armenian nationalism and aspirations for state of our own were originally fueled by religious reasons, i.e. The desire to be free from Muslim oppression and second class citizenship. The earliest proponents for an Armenian state wanted it to be a Christian Kingdom that would be a Home not only for Armenians, but for all the Christians of the region. It’s only much later under the influence of more modern forms of European nationalism and secularizing influences that Armenian nationalism became much more exclusionary and predominantly ethnic in character.
Personally I lean more towards the religious side of things. To this day I would like Armenia to be a sanctuary for all the Christians of the Middle East. I put my Christianity before my ethnicity.
If Azerbaijan became a predominantly Christian Country within my lifetime, I would immediately begin advocating for some sort of union of states.
wouldn’t be any different. look at georgia or armenia, they aren’t any better either because of corruption.
Allaha şükürler olsun ki biz o dünyada yaşamiriq
Most people would probably be Udi or related ethnic groups.
Russians would probably assimilate Azerbaijani Turks into Armenians amd slavify the rest.
The Russians would simply interfere with us, the Georgians, or the Armenians. Our ethnic group would literally cease to exist. So, praise be to Allah that we are a separate ethnic group
I love Alternate History:
Depends on the type of Christianity, converted by the Tsar means Orthodox which means u would be more similar to Georgia but religion at that point didn’t matter but maybe Transcaucasia later on might have been possible due to more Georgian influence. Not getting converted with the Arabs would lead to Oriental Orthodoxy and deep ties between Armenia and Azerbaijan as brotherly nations, often suffering the same struggles. But Azerbaijan was the Savafids, Qoyonlu, etc. It could mean that the Persians become Christian, meaning the spread of Islam to the East is stopped for a while. An interesting scenario…
it would be same probably except for the green color in Azerbaijani flag.
moon and star used to be a Turkish symbol not Islamic, but since Ottoman Empire a Muslim Empire used it, people associated it with Islam.
culturally however, I think it would be more realistic that people would hold Tengerism believes and not 100% Christian.
something like Thailand or Korea or Japan. majority Buddhist or Shinto and there are also Christians.
The Turkic people who choose Judaism or Christianity mostly lost their identity. Islam suited better.
You’d probably be a lot nicer to your neighbors
Is that change something? For me nahhh,
It depends how they come to be Christians. Through Russians, Byzantine Romans or Armenians or some other way?
Considering the amount of Russification even without Christianity, Azerbaijan wouldn’t exist.
The Tats, Talysh etc were never Christian AFAIK
Russians are not missionaries whatsoever. They were completely okay with local religions back in the day. Such a scenario is simply impossible.
Caucasian Albania had its own autocephalous Church for 2 centuries. Our bishops converted some Huns. We had much better relations with Armenia and firmly opposed Iranian attempts to make us pagans. If we assume that the Church of Albania survived within its own borders, we would have a Caucasian language, would’ve never been Turkicised or Iranicised to the same degree and would hence have little to no ties with Turkic nations, including Southern Azerbaijan. Culturally, we would be unanimously seen as Europe’s last frontier. During the Council of Florence Orientals sent their representatives, some of them recognized Rome’s supremacy and became Catholics. If we did so, Azerbaijan would’ve had a much earlier boom in cultural development and probably would’ve become a flourishing center of missionary activities.
I absolutely am biased, and I recognize this, but Christianity suits Turkic people much more than Islam does. In comparison to Arabs, we develop science much more, respect our women, and I don’t think that our language is in any way worse than Arabic if you want to worship. Nobody sane wants Azerbaijan or Turkiye to be similar to Pakistan, Afghanistan, or Arab countries, for, at least, the last century we want our vector of development to be in being east end of the West, and not west end of the East. Remaining Christian would’ve prevented us from being part of the East in the first place. Let’s be honest, we’re closer to Armenians and Georgians than we’re to Arabs.
Then Armenians would be Muslims
That doesn’t make any sense
I’ve not traveled much outside of the us Canada and Mexico. I’m curios is Baku safe? The food looks amazing
Nothing. Because they are not religious.
Maybe finally some law and order and no dictator?
You would be cousins of the Armenians. ;))
>Or what if Arabs never arrived
You are aware that Arabs did not convert the Turks right? 😂 Please consult google before making comments
Due to close proximity with Persians when Turks where still in the Golden Horde, a ruler converted to Islam and that’s how Turks for the most part became Muslim.
Back when y’all were in Central Asia (aka near the Persian world).
