That’s honestly how it should be done. Trying to normalize carbon taxes all over the world is hopeless.
Exempt domestic production and allow the importer country to apply their carbon tax to it.
The whole point of the industrial carbon tax was to harmonize trade with the EU and UK, so if they’re going to walk away from it, then we will too.
Fighting climate change appears to be over.
You can tie it to defence output. EU is holding back on climate policy because the immediate threat of Russia and the US pulling out of NATO is a big possibility.
At this point, Canada should think about it. Our neighbor to the south is increasingly becoming authoritarian and I think we need to start thinking about making some air defence…
A carbon tax, the most milquetoast policy, and we can’t even agree to impose it internationally…we’re so cooked.
I voted Carney to lock in the liberal gains from the last few governments. I was willing to accept no more liberal gains in exchange for no backwards steps.
That was basically the last justification the Liberals had to keep the industrial carbon tax on Steel so I’ll be interested to see if they finally cave on it or come up with a new reason.
I don’t think any of this backsliding happens if Harris is President. I’m still very disappointed in this knowing progress isn’t always a straight line. I just don’t think our environment has the time to absorb the impact of the Cheetoh man.
Climate change does not appear to be an urgent issue in practice. The EU has used it more as a political tool to reduce reliance on Russian energy than as a true environmental priority. If it were genuinely urgent, we wouldn’t see governments scaling back green policies, imposing 100% tariffs on affordable Chinese EVs, or pushing people back into offices instead of supporting remote work. These contradictions suggest that climate action is being driven more by political and economic strategy than by environmental necessity.
