WTF.
We read Merchant of Venice in HS. My English teacher was a lapsed Irish Catholic with a Jewish wife. They were raising their kids Jewish. He brought this up to give some context about the discussions we were about to have and alert us about certain sensitivities. He then laid out for us where the stereotype that Shakespeare was playing into came from: good Christians weren’t allowed to lend money and Jews were barred from many (if not all) professions considered respectable by good Christians. And since Judaism doesn’t forbid money-lending, Jews lent money. The anti-Semitic trope was born from anti-Semitic laws.
And this fuck is just casually spitting this shit out while straight up attacking universities over alleged anti-Semitism. It’s not just his brain being mush. He’ll get away with it because enough people who catch the reference will secretly agree with the sentiments behind it.

“No death tax, no estate tax,” Trump told the crowd. “No going to the banks and borrowing from – in some cases – a fine banker, in some cases, shylocks and bad people.”
Trump went on to say the “shylocks and “bad people” managed to “destroy a lot of families.” The president then pivoted to slamming Democrats, who uniformly opposed his bill in the House and Senate.
“Not one Democrat voted for us,” Trump continued. “And I think we use it in the campaign that’s coming up, the midterm, because we’re gotta beat them. But all of the things that we’ve given, and they wouldn’t vote, only because they hate Trump. But I hate them too. You know that? I really do. I hate them. I cannot stand them because I really believe they hate our country.”

For those that don’t know, Shylock is the Jewish character in The Merchant of Venice who was known for his scheming and immoral revenge plans. The character basically strengthened a preexisting racist Jewish stereotype forgenerations as Shakespeare was required reading for hundreds of years.
(To be fair to Shakespeare, there are no good moral characters in Merchant, they’re all pieces of shit, especially the christian main charcters who force their religion on Shylock as punishment in the end.)

People were putting bets on the first slur to come out of his mouth on live TV but I didn’t hear anyone bet on this one.
People keep bringing up like this is an obscure reference to Shakespeare but just because you haven’t heard it used IRL in your own life doesn’t mean it’s not a slur. Its just a vintage slur, there used to be way more slurs in common usage.

This is fully “mask-off” shit. Totally staggering that he would choose to use this terminology considering his supposedly ardent support of Israel. Side note, it’s also mindblowingly hypocritical when you consider the actions of the monstrous and stereotypical caricature he’s referencing compared to his own business practices. The iconic showdown with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office immediately comes to mind but there are countless other examples. Facts probably lost on him because he doesn’t read.
