    1. *Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced that Russia had become the first country to recognize the Taliban as the ruling government of Afghanistan. Russian state media outlet TASS reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin made the final decision based on advice from Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Taliban-led administration has not yet been formally recognized by any other state.*

      What’s the quid pro quo? Does this mean Russia’s about to do a big recruitment drive of poor Afghan men?

    3. So other countries don’t recognize them but continue to do somewhat business with them? Doesn’t China still have a belt road initiative through Afghanistan?

    4. Technically, Taliban is the only government organization that had successfully survived decades long invasions from both Russia and USA in the last 50 years, as far as I know..

      The irony is ripe. Imagine telling a 1980’s Soviet soldier that their future president would support the very people they were trying to kill.
