The goal isn’t wrong, but the plan was never realistic.
Temporary residents are filling gaps in labour and education—cutting numbers without fixing the underlying systems just shifts blame. We need better coordination, permanent pathways where it makes sense, and real investment—not just caps and headlines.
Why have a gun buyback program that hasn’t bought back any guns? The Liberals have perfected seeming to do something without actually doing anything.
Carney has to meet the moment on immigration. If he fails to curb immigration enough, it could sound the death knell for his government (as it did for Trudeau). We need to lower annual PR numbers beyond 2027 and eliminate any remaining incentive for individuals to stay in Canada illegally after their work permit expires.
Immigration really needs to be addressed in a big way.
Programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program/LMIA Process and what the International Student Program along with countless other federal and provincial equivalent programs have become is not pro-immigrant and it is not pro-working class.
These are programs structured by business lobby interests to exploit foreign workers for cheap labour and to further weaponize that exploitative framework against the fair and honest bargaining power of all working demographics. In particular our most vulnerable working demographics like low income workers, gig workers, and so forth.
It shouldn’t matter where on the political and ideological spectrum you are. These programs are completely mismanaged, inherently structured wrong, full of exploitation, and the general abuse of these already horrible programs is massive.
We also need to do a deep dive into the „Immigration Consulting“ space and frankly not just do some investigations but have some arrests. That arena has become a den of thieves and fraudsters.
The liberals are hoping that their tiny cuts are enough to deal with the growing backlash against mass immigration.
