Not surprising. There are many stories of Germans who reported their Jewish wife’s (some even their kids) to the Nazi government. They claimed to love their family and their wives. They didn’t believe their family was apart of the problem the Nazis were talking about. They were the exception. Their loved one was one of the good ones. Racism and xenophobia never withstands meeting people in that group of people for the people they meet. They think well that person wasn’t one of them but they are still the problem.
