The UK has announced a roadmap to accelerate the rollout of solar panels on houses across the country, which could save families around £500 each year on their energy bills.
The Solar Roadmap sets out the steps needed for the government and industry to deliver 45-47 GW of solar by 2030, which will support up to 35,000 jobs and use less than half a percent of total UK land.
Rooftop solar panels adds value through lowering bills, but also through increasing the financial value of a property, as well as a sustainable form of generating electricity, a key step towards net zero.
The plan includes increasing solar deployment on new build homes through the Future Homes Standard, launching a call for evidence about the untapped potential of solar in car parks across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, launching a safety review to distribute portable plug-in solar panels to increase access for those in rented accommodation or apartments, and stronger engagement with industry and trade bodies to identify skills gaps in the solar sector to support more people into well-paid clean energy jobs.
For reference, according to [https://grid.iamkate.com/](https://grid.iamkate.com/) the total electric demand in the country right now is 34.6 GW. If they get anywhere near this target it will be the end of fossil electric generation in this country outside the worst possible generation conditions, and at unit prices that will drag anything else that can be electrified along for the ride.
It would be a huge national and climate win.
I’m also pleased to see they’ve actually removed coal entirely from this dashboard since the last time I used it.
Good. This is the sort of thing I will absolutely vote for.
It will generate jobs in manufacture (of everything required to get panals on roofs), in fitting, in… all the things.
It will (in theory) lower bills. It will lower pollution.
This is good thing.
Also, throw in a couple of nuclear reactors like Sizewell and you’re laughing.

Good idea although the costs of installing solar on an existing property are still prohibitive.
Over £10K for a somewhat small array of 8 panels and a 3-4kWh battery isn’t ideal for most if they want fast adoption across the country.
Good. I think we also need to make it easier and cheaper for people to implement home solar and battery systems. Lets take advantage of the vast cheap chinese batteries and solar panels
I’ll be amazed if we get one-tenth of that. 80% of the budget will go to lawyers to bicker and argue in planning meetings and consultations and we’ll all be poorer except the NIMBY pricks holding everything in this country up.
Need to stop the NIMBYs from blocking battery storage, they’re very active all across the UK.
This is all well and good, but a lot of DNOs are owned by investment firms who are not reinvesting back into the infrastructure whilst picking up the government payments.
All the stuff that’s gone down with Thames Water, expect to see it with your local electricity cable owner over the next few years.
Great news. I don’t think there’s a more insane political policy than net „stupid“ zero. The second hottest June on record and reform are pumping out that it’s all a hoax and we need more fossil fuels.

1000 km² of solar panels. So yeah, that aint happening. Even 10% of that would be a big achievement.
I bet if they made a plan to force all landlords who own more than one house to install solar panels on both or all then this would be accelerated even faster
Many people want solar panels over their head but many people can’t because it isn’t exactly down to them to have them installed or not
