      Do they still actually think that all the normal stuff is going to happen? Republicans will never ever willingly give up power again, Whatever they need to do to stop the transfer of power is what they will do going forward.

      They are building concentration camps because they are not at all concerned with being reelected.

      I wish there were still a bunch of my grandparents generation around to offset this level of denial of reality.

      This far out, polls are basically meaningless.

      That said, I suspect Harris is done. Nobody wants another Adlai Stevenson where the same person is on the top of the ticket twice and loses both times.

      I also suspect —and I wish I wasn’t right about this, but I suspect I am— the party is going to pick a straight white man who has been a governor or senator for long enough to have some accomplishments worth mentioning and who has clearly been vetted by voters and has a track-record of fighting off GOP opponents. That’s not Buttigieg either.

      If there are free and fair elections in 2028 —or even if the GOP can only cheat by a few percentage points— a risk-averse Democratic Party that needs the win is probably going to pick a candidate where identity politics and quiet racism/misogyny/homophobia are not going to be loudly expressed in the polling booth.

      Reading these comments… wow. Y’all seem to like losing, a lot.

      For one, there’s *already* a “they didn’t learn” or “we’re being ‘forced’ to have a bad candidate” sentiment, despite the fact this is a poll. It’s not like a DNC boogie-man ranking of their choices. This is just a snapshot of where *people* are right now.

      For #2 thinking that Harris lost because she wasn’t “left” enough (she was), or because she was a woman, is just fucking stupid.

      Then there’s this third group saying “the candidate needs to be moderate and have broad appeal” to win the general, which is directly against #1.

      If you don’t like the candidates, get involved IN THE FUCKING PRIMARY. And don’t use 2024 as an excuse, there was an actual primary (just no one actually fucking ran in it against an incumbent because of a flawed idea about the advantages of incumbency).

      Right now it seems pretty obvious to me, that you all here on Reddit like to whine and pretend that you have all the answers, and then proceed to get absolutely curb-stomped by the likes of *Donald Fucking Trump*, who, may I remind you, defies every one of these rules: he’s neither far left, nor milquetoast or broadly appealing, is clearly not working class, and actually totally rigged his primary.

      Still won. Why? Republicans, despite being fucking idiots, fall in-line. They understand that the best candidate is not the *only* candidate, and that whoever “wins” their primary is closer to their shitty ideals than the alternative.

      Here on the largely left-leaning Reddit, we like to pick-apart every candidate over the 3-5% differences and refuse to participate and then watch in horror as concentration camps pop up, Gaza still gets bombed to oblivion, Ukraine gets abandoned, Iran gets attacked directly by the US, and masked government agents abduct people. Oh and climate change continues to get worse.

      Yall are a fucking joke.

      Get in the primary, vote, and when your person loses don’t put your fucking head in the sand. It’s wild to me that yall are *less* capable of compromise than REPUBLICANS for fucks sake.

      I love Pete and think Harris would make a good president but I feel like Dems should play it safe. Mark Kelly, Tim Walz, Andy Beshear would be great picks.

      I just don’t think we can sway Trump voters by promoting a woman or gay man. Let’s do whatever we have to in order to get Trump out of office and right this ship.

      Again, I’d have no problem voting for Pete or Harris but we have to be smart about this next election…if we even have one.

      If we could put a Southern straight white male with left-populist views on economic issues he would run the table in 2028. Lower information voters really want a better safety net, but they primarily vote based on optics.

      Downvote me all you want but the bigots who were unwilling to vote for a woman will not vote for a gay man. A significant portion of the voting public couldn’t understand a platform with any complexity and will vote with their bigoted gut.

      I don’t have a solution, but I’m worried about a very real problem.

      I think I’d pick Pete over Kamala. Obviously, I’d vote for either one, but in a primary contest I’d go with Pete. I like his style a bit more, and he has more credibility on some issues. She’s extremely qualified on paper, but she’s got some baggage and there are a few issues I disagree with her on. Plus, she’s got the stain of a lost presidential run whereas Pete would be coming in fresh.
