Personally, I am disappointed.
I get that securing a (new) deal with USA is important but with what happened to our current deal and with how Trump changes his mind, it’s also possible for him to go back on his word later on.
I also agree that it does send a message to the USA that we would accept their demands easily..
This is starting to look more like an own goal Carney’s part. If they were not committed to implementing the DST, then why didn’t they just pause it while negotiations were ongoing?
They should be.
They got swindled by the whole “eLbOws uP” routine, and were told that PP would be the one to capitulate and the CPC was the corporate sellout party.
The LPC has *always* always been the party of crony capitalism and capitulating for foreign governments for their own gain.
I’m not saying the CPC would have been any better here, but they certainly couldn’t do any worse.
I understand Carney is in a tough position.
He is dealing with someone that much before being President of the United States of America made clear he only believes in the conception of distributive bargaining which is all about winners and losers. Donald Trump can’t comprehend of different perspectives around bargaining that don’t fit a „winners“/“losers“ framework.
Carney also is dealing with heavy western alienation that is pumped by many times U.S. right-wing interests and the Oil & Gas Lobby amongst other „interesting“ actors in our society.
That being said I think any progressive person who expected more the Mark Carney of „Value(s)“ and The Reith Lectures [https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000py8v](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000py8v) is a bit underwhelmed to say the least.
A lot of people were excited about a more serious push to Green Energy, Green Infrastructure, and in general Green Technology.
A society more focused on the working class and the most vulnerable.
Real immigration reform that took on the business lobby especially in regards to horrific programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program/LMIA Process and how the International Student Program has ended up.
The list goes on and on.
It’s right now looking a lot more like Trudeau and Electoral Reform for many.
Damn. Carney cannot catch a break.
First Canadians are all pissed that trade talks have stopped because the orange baby threw a tantrum due to the DST.
Now Canadians are all pissed because Carney cancelled the DST so he can resume talks with the orange baby.

Maybe CityNews should wait for polling rather than just citing tweets from @BigBolMongoose and @Slob924. It seems a little premature to emphatically make this conclusion.
Just wait and see. This is a soap operat or reality show.
The fact Trump threw a tantrum over it and spent the weekend rsnting about Dairy tells you he didnt get the reaction he actually wanted. If DST is his win, which American voters do it help? Weve made our concessions before softwood, steel, autos, or fertilizer are even raised. And the DST can always just be reinstated…. can’t it?
Which is fair, looking like he caved.. but naturally none of them know how to see context.
The tax was likely to bring in $1.6 billion a year, up to 2 billion. Not chump change, and would be nice to stick it to the tech oligarchy’s, but.. Trade with the states brought in over **$400 billion in 2024**, and we bought over $300 billion from them. And those are consecutive numbers from prior years.
So ya, a minor sacrifice and likely a temporary one since other country’s are planning the same thing. Just gotta appease the baby down south until other deals move along with other countries.
I’m not upset. Because Carney and his team are likely going over the numbers and can see that the dollars lost from tariffs outweigh the gains from the DST.
Secondly, it’s not like you can’t just bring back the DST if/when Trump once again breaks his agreements that are made.

But seriously, this is just one tiny part of a massive undertaking – neogitating with a madman who acts in bad faith multiple times a day.
Yes I disagree with dropping the tax. But I expected it, it was basically enacted to use as leverage for this sort of situation.
I also find it funny that conservatives, who hated the tax, are critical of Carney for „caving to Trump“ and dropping the tax they didn’t support in the first place…
why? wouldn’t this tax just end up costing Canadians more for already overpriced streaming services? they will pass this tax onto us.. we understand this right?
I don’t think the appearance of economic policy of our country being subject to the „Truth“ Social posts of that madman south of the border is a good look, no matter how pragmatic of a move some might be consider that to be.
My conspiracy theory is that this was engineered and agreed upon to give the Trump administration a public“win“ that they can sell to their base.
