Submission Statement: Canada will rescind the digital services tax after trump pulled out of trade talks. this tax was going to be imposed retroactively, starting from 2022. this tax was one of the „non tariff trade barriers“ cited by trump.
IMO: This gets to the root of Canadas precarious geopolitical position. Today the majority of Canada’s GDP being reliant on trade with the united states. that isn’t exactly popular to point out. but America is essentially holding a knife to Canadas throat. the military balance is even worse. Canada could afford to push back on America when America was focused more globally, after all there was always a bigger threat then Canada, but with an isolationist America, Canada and Mexico are America’s largest focus.
the relationship built on America being passive with its immediate neighbors is over. North America’s leaders have to navigate the new situation. there is no over the horizon threat America needs help with. America is going to act like it used to, and that should terrify Mexico and Canada

Unfortunately it will be something else next. The sooner we diversify away from the US the better.
