Trump revealed in a late-night Truth Social post that he’s planning to meet with people interested in running in the primary against incumbent North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis—in response to Tillis’ decision to vote against the president’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
Tillis has previously been a supporter of Trump, appearing at one of his campaign stops in North Carolina during the 2020 election. However, he revealed in a recent statement that he would be voting against the president’s megabill—largely because of Trump’s proposed cuts to Medicaid.

Tillis has not suddenly grown morals. He’s the same MAGA asshole he’s always been. What’s different is he’s up for reelection and it appears his opponent will be **Democrat Roy Cooper**, North Carolina’s popular two-term governor and attorney general, state senator and assemblymember who has never lost an election.

There’s 53 Republican Senators. They can spare a few dissenting votes for Republicans who need some politically-independent votes for campaign reasons. Mitch McConnell was a master at passing legislation with a bare minimum of votes; the passage of their bills was the important thing, not „running up the score“ by having more votes than they needed. You can bet there were careful orchestrations about who was (is) allowed to vote against bills: notice how little repercussions were received by those dissenting Republican Senators.
Also: There hasn’t been a vote yet. Tillis is just making public statements, likely also for campaign reasons — like Murkowski etc., and Tillis is very likely a „yes“ vote.
Trump just doesn’t know how the game is played.
