On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that parents with religious objections to books with LGBTQ+ characters must be allowed to opt their children out of any public school instruction that uses those books. The decision in [*Mahmoud v. Taylor*](https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24pdf/24-297_4f14.pdf) was handed down along party lines, with all six Republicans in the majority and all three Democrats in dissent.
The *Mahmoud* case highlights the Republican justices’ impatience to remake constitutional law in a more socially conservative image, [especially in cases involving religion](https://www.vox.com/22889417/supreme-court-religious-liberty-christian-right-revolution-amy-coney-barrett). It is certainly possible for public school instruction to violate a religious child’s constitutional rights. The Constitution, for example, forbids government institutions like public schools from coercing students into violating their religious views. As Justice Samuel Alito notes in the *Mahmoud* opinion, the Constitution would also [forbid teachers from openly mocking a student’s faith](https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24pdf/24-297_4f14.pdf).
But, as a federal appeals court which previously heard the *Mahmoud* case warned, we don’t actually know whether the Constitution was violated in this case. Although Montgomery County, Maryland, approved several books with LGBTQ+ characters for use in public schools, the lower court found that the record in this case [contains no information](https://www.vox.com/scotus/408356/supreme-court-mahmoud-taylor-dont-say-gay) “about how any teacher or school employee has actually used any of the Storybooks in the Parents’ children’s classrooms, how often the Storybooks are actually being used, what any child has been taught in conjunction with their use, or what conversations have ensued about their themes.”
Nevertheless, Alito handed down a fairly broad opinion which is likely to impose substantial new burdens on public schools, and he did so without waiting until the record in this case was more fully developed by lower courts. The result is that many schools may struggle to comply with the new obligations that were just imposed, and most schools are likely to exclude books that introduce queer themes or that even mention LGBTQ+ characters.

Every time these bans on LGBTQIA+ books get passed or approved, it immediately gets turned on the bible. The bible and Quran are two of the most graphic and inappropriate books imaginable for children. It depicts, in great detail, several instances of rape, incest, and child abuse. If conservatives want to ban LGBTQIA+ books, then we must also ban their grossly inappropriate and disgusting books from the same places.
Imagine being scared of literally everything you don’t understand? What a bunch of snowflakes.

Fine. It is against my religion to have my children taught by republicans. Now there is a Supreme Court precedent for me to sue under.

I’m in favor of teaching the Bible, line for line, starting in 1st grade. In every single detail. No skipping any part, beginning to end.
And this is why I pulled my son from public school. I saw what was coming down the road. Say what you want about homeschooling. My son won’t be a statistic.
This is all headed for something way, way more ominous. Don’t assume otherwise, they want to eliminate trans people and make homosexuality illegal as an end goal. They are trying to eliminate the possibility that children will feel any empathy towards LGBTQIA people, so they can eventually eliminate them one way or another.
Yet another example of the Court handing down a decision with no actual case to be had and the case is entirely a made up hypothetical slippery slope. Same logic as the web designer case, just conjure up a scenario and throw it at the court claiming religious discrimination. Here, there is literally no fucking case. None. Proof:

Lets add that there was no harm actually shown in this case, and no real standing by the parties. In the past, this would have been tossed on those grounds. You know, like the 14th Amendment case in Colorado a couple of years ago. Since Trump hadn’t officially declared he was running, the case was tossed as there was no standing.
It’s not about allowing parents to opt out. It’s about forcing schools to go through the laborious process of reaching out to every parent for permission and then verifying that kids have received permission. It’s insane.

What I hate about this is that it’s the mere existence of queer people that is so offensive. It assumes that their mention or presence is somehow sexual and inappropriate for children. Having two dads is as sexual as having a mom and a dad, which is zero.
It’s exhausting being a gay American. It’s doubly so being a gay American who is a Middle School teacher. Honestly, if you’re a straight person, please take a moment to reflect on the luck you have in life simply by virtue of your sexuality.
My straight colleagues can openly talk about their families, have photos of their spouses, not worry about what parents might think of them. I can’t do of any of that. I’m not even being hyperbolic. It’s simply in my best interest to avoid discussing my relationship at all. It’s in my best interest to live in the closet. It sends a poor signal to LGBTQ students as well since it makes me a shitty role model.
It’s exhausting.

Remember, in the original interpretations of book of Genesis, the wickedness of the people in Sodom and Gomorrah was their hostility and cruelty to outsiders, not that they engaged in homosexual practice.
My „religious“ convictions include not wanting my children to be exposed to the immorality of Republicans. Can I sue about that?

This isn’t actually enforceable unless everybody decides to go along quietly, OR if the Supreme Court finally outright specifies that this ruling was intended to only protect Abrahamic religions.
Expect the various secular Satanic organizations to start the ball rolling. „THE SCHOOLS MUST NOTIFY PARENTS ABOUT ANY POTENTIALLY RELIGIOUSLY OFFENSIVE MATERIAL“ is a ludicrous rule because someone is always going to be credibly religiously offended about something.
What will these parents do if their kid has a gay classmate or if parents of another kid in the class are gay? I just don’t understand how the existence of gay people is threatening to anyone. I think allowing parents to encourage discrimination is akin to child abuse. Some of their own kids or close friends could be gay and will significantly damaged by these policies. I grew up in a time
when sexuality wasn’t talked about by teachers, but kids teased each other mercilessly about it. Many gay kids of my generation were seriously depressed or suicidal. This is dark.
Will my future children be able to opt out of classrooms that have the Ten Commandments hanging in them or have the “pledge of allegiance” performed in them? Will I be able to opt them out of teachers classes who express their religious and political views?
You know it was goofy back when parents were opting their kids out of sex education back when we still taught it, and everyone was so confused by the increased teenage pregnancy rates after they destroyed sex education with “abstinence only” education. Then they slowly destroyed the “written” word (literally) by removing cursive writing and proceeded to complain that kids can’t read or write cursive. Then they destroyed reading and comprehension by adopting this English to pass a test method….

I object to my children being taught anything religion based, in any capacity.
I just need to get something off my chest. I’m a gay man living in America, and I have completely given up hope. I genuinely do not see any future where things in my country improve. We’re nosediving into a complete fascist hellscape, no one can afford to live, public lands are being sold off to the highest bidder, unconstitutional wars are breaking out every person in power seems to either cheer every step along or pretend to care while doing nothing. Trans people are being villainized and attacked, and things only seem to get worse and worse every day for the past 10+ years.
People are being fucking kidnapped off the streets, from their homes, and shipped off to fucking camps. One of my partners is a naturalized citizen whose father worked his ass off for years to bring him here. And we live in constant fear of him being yanked off the street, never to be seen again. And things won’t change any time soon, if at all. Half the people in this country are total lost causes. Not just with the lack of literacy but a complete lack of any empathy. They genuinely don’t see anyone who doesn’t look and think exactly like them as fucking people. How are we supposed to deprogram people like that when they would rather see me dead than consider they might be wrong for even one second? And of course, companies are making billions of dollars profiting from this hatred. Sewing the divide becomes pointless when it isn’t profitable, so just give the shittiest people confirmation bias every day for the rest of their lives. And of course, it will only get worse the better AI gets. People will go down the right-wing pipeline because it’s not like they’ll look into what they’re seeing, and then fascist dictators have another sycophant to control.
How is my family and I supposed to escape this? It’s not like we can leave. We can barely afford to exist here. Let alone the thousands and thousands of dollars it’ll take to go somewhere else. And even then, the moment they see “autism” on my paperwork or any of my partner’s health issues, they’ll just reject us. We can protest, and I cheer on those who have been brave enough to do so, but it’s all falling on deaf ears when the people we protest don’t care, and half the country thinks protestors are just whiners setting stuff on fire. I could try to save people in my life, and I have tried. It hasn’t worked because it’s just talking to a wall of misinformation and whataboutism. So, what do I even do at this point? All I can do is close my blinds and just… wait for everything to get violent? Wow, I can’t wait to die in some sort of civil war or death camp.
I’m sorry for the wall of text. I’m sorry for bringing someone’s mood down if they read all this. I’m sorry for everyone who just wants to live a safe, fulfilling life as themselves. We wanted things to be better, but all we got is a world with no hope. You don’t deserve this.
