No, you did well to say it because his decisions were completely fucking wrong. Between him and JJ, I hope that neither of them ever touch Star Wars ever again.

Because loony Star Wars and Rian Johnson fans will be mad at him, he has to pretend to like TLJ now.

This is just another example of Hollywood executive ruining potential of their actors because they’re just… so godamn smart to them.

Rian is a great director, he’s terrible at plot though, it’s a recurring problem, and it doesn’t serve him or audiences to pretend he doesn’t need support there. The entire sequel trilogy plot was an exercise in corporate jazz, shouldn’t have left the writers room until a well paced set of 3 scripts were produced that could be considered shooting scripts, with production aligned to those scripts not the wants and whys of what individual directors wanted to ‘leave their mark’ on a beloved franchise. I can forgive George, it’s his baby, no one else gets a pass.
This to me is the most interesting excerpt from the article to me:
Hamill believed Luke would become even more of a hero and an advocate for the Jedi in the wake of Ben Solo’s betrayal. In order to go in the complete opposite direction that Johnson scripted, Hamill needed to convince himself that Luke was possible of such darkness.
“I said, ‘Can I make up my own backstory of why he is the way he is? I don’t want to just say that I have bumped my head and I have brain damage,’” Hamill said. [Rian] said, ‘Yeah, do whatever you want.’ So I made up a much, much darker backstory that I thought could justify him being that way.”
“I thought, ‘What could make someone give up a devotion to what is basically a religious entity, to give up being a Jedi?’” Hamill then explained. “Well, the love of a woman. So he falls in love with a woman. He gives up being a Jedi. They have a child together. At some point the child, as a toddler, picks up an unattended lightsaber, pushes the button and is killed instantly. The wife is so full of grief, she kills herself. I thought, that would be. … Because I hear these horrible stories about these children who find unattended guns and wind up dead. That resonated with me so deeply. … But [Rian] didn’t have the time to tell a backstory like that, I’m guessing. He just wanted a brief thing to explain it. And to me, it didn’t justify it.”
“That said — and I told [Rian] this — despite the fact that I disagree with your choices for Luke, I’m going to do everything within my power to make your screenplay work as best as I can,” Hamill added. “And the only thing unfortunate about that is, I’ve heard comments from fans who think that I somehow dislike Rian Johnson, and nothing could be further from the truth.”
So it’s an actor-invented backstory, but it’s interesting to think that’s what Hamill invented in his mind to try and connect the dots.
That was the last movie I saw in the theater, not because of that but I wonder if something in my subconscious said „that’s it, I’m out“
More people need to accept that if Luke did not run away in shame, then he should have never been missing from JJ’s first sequel movie in the first place. This is a JJ problem, not a Rian Johnson problem.
My favorite version of Luke Skywalker because he was the older Empire Strikes Back version.
Nah, the movie was trash. All three of them were.

No, no, no, he did not make a “great movie”, let’s be real; all those sequels were all over the place, none of that shit made any sense and they wasted tons of time on lame character story lines and boring action.
Im not saying TLJ was a bad movie, but Mark’s criticisms were plenty valid.
I heard it said that The Last Jedi essentially broke movie discourse forever and I’m inclined to agree with that.

The Last Jedi…there’s a lot to talk to about.
I’ll just say that the battle with Prateorian Guard was visceral. The ending was hopeful that the Force was out & about more with the Resistance.
Snoke was a surprise.
I think thats all I got.
His criticism was valid, as was a lot of peoples criticisms. The movie had a lot of big plot holes and questionable choices of themes and setting and character development. It also wasnt that great of a movie as ‘a middle movie in a trilogy.’
And honestly I think Mark just doesnt want to rock the boat anymore and has to pretend he liked the movie after all that.

It’s kinda wild how J.J. Abrams and Bob Iger fucked over the sequel trilogy but it was Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy who were stuck with most of the blame. Abrams‘ decision have gotten more ire and criticism over the years, but Iger pretty much got away scot-free.
The fans def were bot the ones to tell mark to keep his mouth shut. We listened, we agreed and disney was the ones who shut him up

Luke contemplating killing his young nephew while he was sleeping is absolute character assassination. Idk how you get the opportunity to write Luke skywalker and decide to go down that nonsensical path
Nah, go off, Mark. Everything that was set up had the rug pulled out from underneath it in order to subvert expectations. It’s still a solid movie, some of the shots are downright beautiful but being critical of some of the choices that Rian Johnson made in TLJ is completely warranted.
My favorite small gripe (again it’s minor but was so glaring when I saw it in the theater) was when Holdo sacrifices herself by crashing into Snoke’s ship and we see the reactions of Poe, Finn and Rose; in the background there are a handful of characters who look like they’re at an office job chatting during a break in the coffee room. They are all probably going through the most chaotic moments in their lives while fleeing their capital ship under fire and they’re just chilling having a casual conversation like it’s a normal Monday afternoon.
Maybe he should have kept Luke skywalker out of the whole movie. Mark is not wrong.
