I think social media encourages all kinds of group hatred or bigotry. Because you can constantly be presented with the worst actors in any group, it’s easy to think „Gosh they must all be like that“. Particularly if you are always online, or have very few meaningful real life friendships, there is no counterbalance to the ways in which groups online are reduced to their worst components and condemned on that basis.

Combine that with the fact that social media weaponizes negative emotion for profits, and is adept at skewing your algorithm to get you mad at somebody, and you can see the disaster heading our way.

well its big business, miserable men make me money. Just look at the hours of youtube/tiktok dross about woke, immigrants and even stuff like EVs. You can make a lot of money selling people their misery if you dont mind selling your soul in the process (or never had one)

Yep. Social media is making people who probably wouldn’t have been misognistic (anymore than what was, unfortunately socially acceptable at the time) say, 30s years ago, become incels

My guess is that hearing about misogyny, (and misandry) all the time is causing people to search harder than they would have for alternative views, which are less socially acceptable, because they are sick of hearing about the ones being pushed, albeit for the right reasons. I don’t think the majority of people wake up every morning wanting to despise the other gender and put everyone opposite from them down. But it is one thing that can happen when people get fed up of one narrative being pushed too much.

When my grandad was a teen (about 1960) he went on a date with a girl he realised half way through he found to be too clingy and a bit „weird“. He mentioned to a friend of my great grandparents that he didn’t want to see her again. He must have talked about her in a not very PC way because he was told by a greatest generation man words to the effect of „Okay, but you should be nice about it, remember any girl you date is somebody’s daughter and sister. You shouldn’t treat them anyway you wouldn’t want your own mum or sister to be treated.“

Which, to me as a woman is clearly a pretty well meaning statement and actually pretty *good* advice. But in today’s time it might be seen as misognistic for being „belittling“ or implying woman are emotional enough to need to be let down gently. Or implying they „belong“ to other people, likely including men (a dad and a brother(s) would be half of the implication, along with a mum sister(s).) I don’t think that, but those things would be pointed out if someone said that in today’s time with the same intentions. And then, at some point, a sense that it is „impossible to be right“ would probably start to be felt, and cause some guys to stop trying.

Plus, once you post something to the internet, it is there forever. So once you get labelled an incel, it is probably going to stuck with you forever. In my granda’s case, if he said something unnecessarily bad about that girl, and that was what prompted that lecture, no one knows what it was now. And he got to grow out of it and prove he was not a misogynist. Which I can vouch that he is not. But if you say something online, especially Reddit where people can view post histories, anything you say can, and will be used against you, even if you no longer believe. So if someone is gonna be hated anyone „Why bother changing“ is a thought pretty likely to cross their mind.

Why is it always so one sided? I’m not denying misogyny exists but the absolute silence when it comes to societal treatments of men is very glaring.

Misogyny has nothing to do with social media it is entirely a reaction to a balanced market of relationships. Relationships used to be the best way for the average person to build wealth, one person focused on making money and the other focused on caring. That doesn’t work anymore because it’s an exploitative practice to prop up a failed economic system. Modern misogyny is the irrational reaction to that failed system, trying to bring it back from impossibility.

Even when Andrew’s content was mainstream on Tik Tok circa December 2022, I don’t remember him saying „rape and murder your partners family“ or even anything that misogynistic frankly.

To me this seems like the family clutching at straws for some kind of motivation for what is clearly a tragic case – it’s easy to have something to blame.
